Today, December 10th, marks the fifth anniversary of the release of Cyberpunk 2077, the popular role-playing game that first came out on December 10, 2020. It’s been a challenging five years for the game, and designer Pawel Sasko recently shared a thoughtful message to celebrate the occasion.
He expressed deep gratitude to everyone involved, saying he was incredibly thankful to be part of the Cyberpunk 2077 community. He loved seeing all the creative content – the pictures, videos, cosplay, and modifications – fans had created, and called the experience an amazing journey.
He expressed his hope that everyone enjoyed the stories and characters they’ve created together. He shared his gratitude for being part of the community and for the opportunity to contribute something meaningful to players’ lives through the game.
Developer Bartek Pyrko shared his pride in helping create Night City. He said the project was transformative for him, both professionally and personally, and that as his first project at CDPR, it remains a significant and memorable part of his career.
The release of Cyberpunk 2077 in December 2020 was plagued with technical problems, so severe that it was temporarily taken off the PlayStation Store, and many players received refunds.
Man, Cyberpunk 2077 had a rough start, but CD Projekt really came through on their promise to fix it. They kept updating and improving the game, and it’s gotten SO much better. The 2.0 update they released in 2023 was a total game-changer, revamping a lot of the core gameplay. Plus, the Phantom Liberty expansion just made everything even better – it’s the game it should have been at launch, honestly.
Cyberpunk 2077 has become a massive success, selling over 35 million copies – even faster than its predecessor, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The game is now also available on the Nintendo Switch 2, and a sequel, Cyberpunk 2, is already being developed.
CD Projekt Red recently revealed a Cyberpunk Trading Card Game, bringing characters from both the Cyberpunk 2077 video game and the Edgerunners Netflix series to life. They plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund the game in 2026.
