As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for Hollywood trivia, I must say that Tom Cruise‘s career has always been peppered with fascinating behind-the-scenes stories. However, the anecdote surrounding the making of the iconic running scene from “Vanilla Sky” takes the cake!
Tom Cruise is among the top-tier actors in Hollywood’s film industry. He rakes in millions and headlines high-budget action films such as “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mission: Impossible.” Interestingly, one of his costliest scenes – which also happens to be one of the priciest ever filmed in cinematography – doesn’t feature any special effects or stunts.
In 2001, the psychological film “Vanilla Sky,” a remake of the Spanish movie “Open Your Eyes,” made its way to theaters. This production by Cameron Crowe featured one of Tom Cruise’s most costly scenes in his career. The expensive scene was filmed in Times Square and depicted David parking his car in an empty street, followed by him running around. This scene reportedly cost $1 million to produce.
Anyone who has visited New York is well aware that Times Square is one of the city’s busiest spots, filled with people day and night. But on a chilly November morning at 4:30 AM, Tom Cruise had the entire street to himself for four hours – it was closed off for Cameron Crowe’s film production.
In order for this event to take place, Tom Cruise and the movie’s creators held discussions with the esteemed former Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani. Ultimately, the honorable Mr. Giuliani gave his approval for the filming of a key scene, which was designed to showcase the city on a global scale.
Remarkably, the team worked swiftly on their assignment, leaving them with more than an extra hour. It was during this free time that Tom Cruise conceived a plan (as reported by The Playlist), suggesting they sprint in every direction, allowing the camera to record the action.
According to Tom Cruise, he would simply sprint back and forth, allowing for running shots. This is what the mayor’s office had been apprehensive about. With around an hour and a quarter remaining, Tom decided to run. And it was stunning – as described by Crowe.
It was how one of Cruise’s most impressive movie scenes was made.
