As an admirer of the artistry that graces our screens, I find myself utterly captivated by the journey and talent of Omar Benson Miller. His portrayal in “Naples to York,” under the visionary direction of Gabriele Salvatores, is nothing short of remarkable. The film’s connection to the legendary Federico Fellini makes it a unique and profound experience that transcends time and space.
Actor Omar Benson Miller, well-known for his roles in “8 Mile,” HBO’s “Ballers,” and Apple’s “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey,” will be featured in the Italian immigration-focused drama titled “Naples to York.” This movie is directed by Oscar-winning director Gabriele Salvatores and will make its debut at the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, marking a significant festival premiere for this production.
Notably, Federico Fellini joined forces with his regular partner, Tullio Pinelli – who contributed to Fellini’s masterpieces “La Dolce Vita” and “8 1/2”, among others – to pen the story of two Neapolitan children seeking a new life in New York by boarding a ship, as a means of escaping Italy’s postwar hardships.
In the movie, Benson Miller portrays the role of the ship’s cook who, throughout their voyage, befriends and looks after a group of children.
He had a conversation with EbMaster regarding his return to Italy, which has been over a decade since he worked on “Miracle at St. Anna” in Tuscany alongside Spike Lee; the reasons behind this movie, initially envisioned by Fellini, being the polar opposite of transient material; and his enthusiasm for his forthcoming project, Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners.
What drew you to the role?
As a cinephile, allow me to share my perspective on a captivating character I portray – George. George is far from perfect; he’s a heavy drinker and his life takes an unfortunate turn when he inadvertently causes harm. The ensuing film delves into the depths of human empathy, offering poignant moments that resonate deeply.
Would you be interested in starring in a movie that was scripted for the big screen by Federico Fellini?
Isn’t that incredible? It’s not just a film I’m working on, but one that might take me on a global journey. You should know I used to play baseball, though an injury ended my school career in the sport. But it was baseball that led me here – chasing after a girl who took me into a theater, and there I fell in love with the stage. The theater became the first thing I loved as much as I loved baseball. During college from 1996 to 2001, I spent every spare moment I had in movie theaters. As for this concept, it originates from a true genius, and it’s amazing that it remains relevant today. To me, this isn’t disposable content; it’s timeless.
How has it been working with Gabriele Salvatores?
I’ve had the joy of collaborating with multiple Oscar winners, and Gabriele ranks among the best people I’ve ever worked with. It’s amusing because his English isn’t fluent and mine isn’t Italian either. What’s remarkable is that we both speak French, so he directs me in French while he directs the entire film in Italian. The irony lies in the fact that our communication and cultural fusion are key elements in this movie. This fusion, however, wasn’t just a theme on-screen; it happened at work with a man who is a genius in his field, an Academy Award winner, and a great guy to boot.
Could you provide some details about the upcoming film “Sinners” directed by Ryan Coogler where you, Michael B. Jordan, and Hailee Steinfeld are the stars?
They bound us to secrecy, but what I will say is that when you see “Sinners,” this film is so creative it’s going to be hard to put it in one genre. On its nose, it’s a horror film. But when you see the film, man, it’s a musical, it’s a comedy, it’s a drama. There’s historic components to it. And it is going to either be absolutely brilliant or it’s going to be: “Man, what were they going for?” And I’m betting on it to be the former, because that kid and that cast and that group that he’s working with, we all got to put something down. It felt special.”
