As a seasoned gamer and Olympics enthusiast with a soft spot for underdog stories, I find Pau Echaniz’s journey absolutely captivating. Here’s a man who’s just won a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics and instead of resting on his laurels, he’s diving headfirst into another competitive arena – League of Legends.
After winning a bronze medal at the Olympics in Paris, canoe slalom athlete Pau Echaniz opted to log into League of Legends. It appears that the competitive spirit from his K-1 event this year was still alive and well within him. In fact, he playfully mentioned that his rank in the game mirrors the bronze medal he received at the K-1 tournament earlier in August.
Pau Echaniz Streams League of Legends after Olympics Event, admits his Bronze Rank
No me monto en una piragüa hasta que suba a oro

Spanish slalom canoeist Pau Echaniz, who recently secured a Bronze Medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, took some time off from paddling to dive into League of Legends streaming. The 23-year-old athlete posted a photo on X showing him playing League of Legends, jokingly stating that he’d rather wait for the gold medal in this game before getting back on his canoe. He even shared a link to his Twitch account where fans could join him for the gaming action.
In a recent chat with journalist Gerard Romero, Echaniz shared his experiences playing League of Legends (LoL). He confessed that before his final match, he lost two games and became quite frustrated. When asked about his skill level, he openly admitted that he was currently ranked bronze in the game. Jokingly, Echaniz added, “I’m as bronze in LoL as I am in the Olympics – stuck and can’t seem to climb out of it.”
In the game League of Legends by Riot Games, players’ skills are categorized into ten levels, with the top tier being the most skilled:
- Challenger
- Grandmaster
- Master
- Diamond
- Emerald
- Platinum
- Gold
- Silver
- Bronze
- Iron
It’s clear that Bronze isn’t at the top in this ranking, so Echaniz has some work ahead before he can get back into the canoe again (metaphorically speaking). To move up the ranks in League of Legends, you need to play matches and win ranked games, which earn you League Points. Once you accumulate a sufficient number of these points, you advance to the next Division within your Tier. Each Tier is made up of four divisions.
Instead, let’s consider this: Wins bring League Points, but losses deduct them too, though the amount can differ. For example, if you lose to a team that’s significantly stronger, you won’t lose as many points. However, consistently winning is essential for climbing up the ranks. Given that Echaniz holds a bronze rank, which is the second lowest in the game, it’s evident that he’s still learning the ropes of this virtual battlefield.
Nevertheless, securing a bronze medal at the Olympics is quite an achievement. At just 23 years old, Echaniz has many more chances to excel further in upcoming competitions. In the interim, he’ll also get the chance to improve his rank in League of Legends.
