Olivia Munn Says Studio Offered Her Seven Figures to Sign an NDA After ‘Traumatic’ Set Incident. She Refused: ‘I Felt It Was So Wrong’ and ‘Disrespectful’

On Monica Lewinsky’s “Reclaiming” podcast, Olivia Munn shared that she declined a multi-million dollar offer from a production studio when they asked her to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement following a distressing event on a film set. However, Munn did not specify the movie nor elaborate on the incident itself.

I found myself needing to lodge grievances with the studio, and there were numerous other aspects involved, but things escalated to a point where I was given a substantial sum of money,” Munn expressed (via E! Online). “Seven figures, as I understand it, as a form of apology and acknowledgement. However, this offer came with an NDA attached. I wouldn’t have minded staying silent about the matter, as I wanted to leave it all behind. But when they insisted on an NDA, I made it clear that I wouldn’t comply.

She went on, expressing her strong disapproval: “It just didn’t feel right,” she said. “This was during the rise of #MeToo and Times Up movements, a time when many were facing scrutiny for having signed non-disclosure agreements. The Harvey Weinstein scandal had sparked a wave of accountability, and people were often labeled as insincere if they had agreed to an NDA for monetary reasons. I was worried that speaking up might undermine the credibility of my own voice.

As a devoted cinephile, I found myself wrestling with apprehension when faced with the prospect of signing an NDA. The studio behind the movie seemed to have an ulterior motive; they might leak it out as part of a scheme to suppress my voice. After consulting with legal eagles, I bravely chose not to put my John Hancock on that document during our studio meeting.

Munn expressed a deep sense of pride when she stepped out, proud of her own actions. She explained that her determination and indignation about the NDA proposal were the factors influencing her choice. ‘I didn’t even consider negotiating,’ she said. ‘All I could think about was how disrespectful that was… Yes, it was the right decision, and those in my life approve of it and are proud of me for standing up. It wasn’t necessarily that I wouldn’t have arrived at the same conclusion; rather, it was the anger that propelled my choice, something I had to learn to control and channel constructively.’

Throughout her career, Munn has been vocal about workplace injustices. In 2017, she accused director Brett Ratner of sexual harassment, claiming that he exposed himself to her inside his trailer during the filming of “After the Sunset” in 2004 as reported to The Los Angeles Times. A year later, Munn disclosed that she had reported to 20th Century Fox during the production of “Predators” in 2018, that director Shane Black had hired his friend and a registered sex offender, Steven Wilder Striegel, for a minor role alongside her. Eventually, Black issued an apology.
