A developer working on Old School RuneScape has admitted the game has an overwhelming number of items. The team needs to address this issue to prevent the game from becoming unmanageable.
So, I was browsing the 2007scape subreddit and saw this hilarious fake tweet someone posted, pretending to be Mod Ash from Jagex. It said the game engine was completely maxed out, and the only solution to all the messy code was to just delete the whole game! They even said they were wiping the servers at midnight and that it was time for us all to go outside. It was a pretty funny joke, though it definitely gave a few people a scare for a second!
The post started as a joke about the complicated code in Old School RuneScape, but a Jagex developer, Mod Nin, responded with a genuine worry.
OSRS has so many items that it’s running out of IDs
They warned that we’re quickly running out of unique identifiers for everything in the game, and if we don’t fix it soon, things could crash.
Each item in RuneScape—from swords and plants to simple things like mud—has a specific identification number. This makes it easy for both the game developers and players to tell them apart. However, after 25 years, RuneScape has accumulated thousands of different items, and Jagex is nearing the maximum number of IDs the game can handle.
Apparently, this issue isn’t new. A moderator shared that it originally surfaced eight years ago.
Mod Ash confirms OSRS is shutting down forever. Its been fun guys.

According to the reply, this happened around May 2018. The developer at the time probably rushed things or didn’t expect the game to last very long, because they only increased the storage space by a small amount.
Man, Old School RuneScape is still going strong! It basically brought back the RuneScape I first fell in love with – the one from 2007. That original game came out way back in 2001, but honestly, Old School RuneScape feels like the real RuneScape now. It’s the version most of us play, and it’s crazy how popular it still is after all these years.
The developers haven’t said what the specific limit is or how near they are to reaching it, but they seem to be actively working on a fix to prevent any major problems. Meanwhile, singer Chappell Roan recently shared that she’s a big fan of RuneScape and hopes the game continues to thrive.
