Today, MinnMax posted a swift interview with Hideki Kamiya, the director behind the upcoming Okami sequel and various other popular action games such as Bayonetta, Viewtiful Joe, and the original Resident Evil 2. Last year at the Game Awards showcase, Kamiya announced his return to Capcom where he will direct the yet-unnamed Okami sequel. The interview, conducted by Ben Hanson, founder of MinnMax, delves into many of Kamiya’s notable accomplishments while also asking engaging personal questions about his coolness and whether his YouTube channel surpasses that of Masahiro Sakurai. I strongly advise checking out the full conversation as it offers a comprehensive look at Kamiya’s impressive career.
Hideki Kamiya answers questions about the Okami sequel in new rapid-fire interview
Okami, initially launched in 2006, has since been upgraded for high-definition play on contemporary gaming platforms. At the Game Awards last December, there were some unexpected revelations, and perhaps the most shocking was the potential sequel to Okami. Fans of this game have eagerly anticipated news about a sequel for almost twenty years, and many thought it would never come to pass. Kamiya departed from Capcom shortly after Okami, but given his success with PlatinumGames, few thought he’d ever return to Capcom.
The interview touched upon various topics, however, Kamiya did address some questions regarding the upcoming Okami sequel. Hanson inquired as to how Kamiya felt about the project at present, and he replied, “I’m simply overjoyed to be given the chance to work on it.” Additionally, he mentioned that he isn’t unduly concerned with deadlines at this moment. Unfortunately, no release year has been announced yet for the Okami sequel, so further details might not be unveiled anytime soon.
Hanson inquired whether Kamiya intended to stay faithful to his original concept for the Okami sequel, which he had conceived twenty years ago during the development of the original game. Kamiya replied, “Absolutely. To a certain extent, yes. However, I must admit that I don’t remember much of what I thought about back then. So I’ll need to recall those thoughts and blend in new ideas.” In an engaging discussion, Kamiya expressed his excitement about the Nintendo Switch 2. According to the interview, he has not yet had the chance to handle the new console, but is drawn to its novel mouse functionality on the Joy-Cons, stating, “The mouse offers numerous possibilities for enjoyable gameplay, so I’m genuinely curious about it.” The prospect of an Okami sequel running on the Switch 2 and utilizing its mouse functions for the brush mechanic is one that I find enticing.
Kamiya also believed that “Okami” could make the finest film adaptation among his games, which has me quite thrilled. Being a fan of the original “Okami” from 2006, I eagerly anticipate discovering more about this sequel, but I understand I’ll need to exercise patience.
