Carrie Patel, who had been with Obsidian Entertainment for 12 years as their director, has now moved to Netflix’s Night School Studio, known for creating the Oxenfree series. It remains unspecified what her role will entail at this fresh studio, but she is set to lead a new video game project there.
It’s unclear what led to Patel leaving Obsidian or the specifics surrounding his departure, but this move has stirred up concern among the studio’s followers. This unease can partly be attributed to the fact that Netflix recently implemented mass layoffs, affecting Night School Studio as early as February 2025. For fans of Oxenfree, this news may offer a glimmer of hope – they had been concerned that the team might be dismantled altogether.
Although it may not be the blockbuster hit of the first half of 2025 given stiff competition from games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Split Fiction, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, fans of Obsidian Entertainment’s RPGs have shown a great deal of enthusiasm for Avowed. In fact, the game has garnered an impressive 77% positive reviews on Steam, with more than 9,500 reviews posted so far.
It’s no wonder that players, who admired Obsidian’s recent release, were not pleased when one of the key figures behind this RPG left. This is particularly true since Patel has been with the studio for 12 years and is a seasoned veteran of the Pillars of Eternity series – one of the last original team members, cherished by fans for her significant role in the franchise’s evolution (as discussed on ResetERA/Reddit).
Some internet users view her as the “rescuer” of the game Avowed, a project that faced numerous challenges during production before finally regaining momentum. It’s undeniably a significant setback for Obsidian Entertainment, who are currently developing, among other things, the sequel to The Outer Worlds.
