Summary
- The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered players are just now remembering how poorly the game handled its “guild overlap”.
- A player expressed their disappointment with the Misdirection quest for the Thieves Guild, which has you stealing the staff from the Archmage of the Mage’s Guild.
- Unfortunately, this player was the Archmage, so they had to steal their own staff and leave themselves a note they’d already read. Hey, at least it gives you plausible deniability.
Playing Baldur’s Gate 3 has given us a taste of something extraordinary. This role-playing game is so vast and intricate that it seems to respond to nearly every action taken by the player, but it’s important to note that games with such depth are exceptionally rare. What makes it even more remarkable is that this level of interactivity was almost unheard of, especially for an RPG, close to two decades ago.
The game “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion” aimed to provide players with maximum freedom of choice, yet it fell short in ensuring every player action seamlessly fit within the game’s narrative context. This was particularly noticeable in the guild quests, as the developers at Bethesda didn’t anticipate that a single playthrough could result in a player becoming the leader of all guilds.
Oblivion Remastered Players Aren’t Fans Of The Game’s “Guild Overlap”
It appears that Oblivion Remastered has failed to rectify a notable problem, leading many fans to recall how incongruous it could be within the game’s immersive experience. Recently, on the official Oblivion subreddit, a user named TheReal8symbols brought up this issue, expressing frustration over two instances where Thieves Guild members disregarded his completion of the Mages Guild questline and his status as Archmage.
As a gamer, I can’t help but chuckle at the absurdity of the Misdirection side quest for the Thieves Guild. It’s downright hilarious when it points out how I had to snatch the Archmage’s staff and leave a note from Methredhel… you know, since I am the Archmage myself! Stealing my own staff and leaving a note for myself, now that’s a goofy twist I didn’t see coming.
Other players describe their approach to dealing with the dilemma, revealing that they often tackle the malicious guilds initially, and subsequently focus on the Fighters and Mages guilds, which they perceive as a path towards redemption. A player named LilacAndDoves takes this strategy a step further by creating distinct characters for each guild, believing that completing all in one playthrough would disrupt their immersion experience.
As a dedicated fan, I often find myself reminiscing about the intricate questline mechanics in Morrowind, where your actions could potentially lock you out of certain storylines. It would be truly enthralling to witness a reprise of this system in The Elder Scrolls 6. Alas, given the anticipated release date, it appears we might be gray-haired elders before that day arrives. For now, I guess we’ll have to content ourselves with the whimsical questlines found in Oblivion.
