Oblivion Remastered is more than a remaster and “almost needs its own word,” says ex-Bethesda dev behind the OG 2006 RPG: “The closest that could come is Oblivion 2.0”

With fans diving into The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered after its unexpected launch by Bethesda Game Studios, ex-developers such as Bruce Nesmith are chiming in with their praise for the updated RPG alongside the gamers.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith, who was part of the original team behind games like Oblivion (2006) and Skyrim, expressed his awe at the remake a week prior to its public unveiling. “I’ve invested numerous years in that project,” he stated. “Countless hours of hard work, perspiration, and emotional effort were poured into it by everyone on the team. And I was intimately familiar with each and every scene they were displaying. They looked nothing short of spectacular.

Initially, the ex-Bethesda developer didn’t anticipate that the remake would be as revolutionary as it has become. He thought it was just going to be an upgrade of textures, but he never envisioned a full overhaul including redoing animations, the animation system, integrating Unreal Engine, altering the leveling system, and revamping the user interface. In other words, he didn’t expect the extent of changes they have announced for the remake; he would not have been surprised by a texture update alone, but the comprehensive overhaul took him by surprise.

According to Nesmith, it’s an incredibly large amount of work that’s being done on the remake. In essence, every aspect of the game is being revised, which makes for a substantial amount of remastering. Honestly, I think the term ‘remaster’ doesn’t quite capture the extent of the project. I’m not even sure it’s fully deserved. As for his feelings about the remake, Nesmith confesses he feels proud. Reflecting on Oblivion’s 19-year history, pride is what he primarily feels.
