Despite being renowned as a classic first-person RPG, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind didn’t quite deliver on its promise entirely. Although you were indeed in Morrowind, the game only allowed exploration within the volcanic island of Vvardenfell. The mainland was often mentioned, but remained tantalizingly out of reach, leaving a sense of longing and unfulfilled adventure.
Delve into the Tamriel Rebuilt project, an expansive mod that’s been under development for decades, with the goal of increasing the playable area within Morrowind to include every corner, city, quest, and character. This week, the development team unveiled its ninth major expansion and largest update yet—Grasping Fortune—bringing a massive new region to traverse, and potentially one of the largest, most densely populated fantasy cities in any RPG. The culmination of seven years’ work dedicated solely to this region can be further explored by checking out the patch notes here.
The Grasping Fortune expansion expands the map southward, stretching it to the very edges of Morrowind, with the standout attraction being the expansive city of Narsis, a stronghold for the lavish House Hlaalu. This city is a busy intersection of trade and illicit activities, featuring bustling port areas. You can either align with the influential figures or immerse yourself in the Ja-Natta Syndicate’s criminal network, as there’s no shortage of activities. The Rebuilt team has also added 270 new quests specifically in this region and 140 new dungeons.
This city isn’t merely large enough to find hiking within it daunting; it’s extensively deep as well. More than 200 buildings here offer fully explorable insides, and a vast network of sewers winds beneath its surface. The magnitude of this expansion cannot be overemphasized.
The Tamriel Rebuilt team boasts an impressive statistic: Over 2,500 distinct Non-Player Characters (NPCs) are found throughout this new region, with a whopping 1,100 of them residing in the city of Narsis alone. To put that into perspective, the entirety of Vvardenfell in the original game, which covered a much larger area, hosted just 2,824 characters.
Essentially, this expansion offers an abundance of fresh Morrowind territories to discover, with this being only one among numerous areas included in the mod. Have a look at the (outdated) interactive map for a glimpse of the vastness that awaits you. For those wanting a more comprehensive understanding, I’d recommend checking out Tamriel Rebuilt on the unofficial Elder Scrolls wiki, but venturing out on your own should provide an enjoyable experience as well.
To access Tamriel Rebuilt, head over to its page on the Morrowind Nexus website. While not essential, it’s worth considering downloading OpenMW too, a contemporary reinterpretation of the game engine that complements Tamriel Rebuilt. In case you can’t get OpenMW, remember to grab the Morrowind Script Extender, which allows many of the mod’s advanced features. Lastly, watch out for an upcoming chat with the team behind this massive project, a testament to their dedication.
