Okay, so this is wild! I just saw a video online of a New York City police officer chasing down a guy who allegedly stole a purse… on horseback! Seriously, a horse! Someone caught the whole thing on camera and it’s going all over the internet. It’s pretty amazing to watch.
On April 15, 2026, around 11 AM, a robbery happened near the corner of West 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue. Interestingly, NBC news cameras were already filming in the area for a different story at the time.
According to reports, a thief stole a woman’s purse and ran away. A police officer on horseback pursued the suspect.
I was watching the bodycam footage, and it was incredible! This officer just took off running – actually, galloping – after the guy who snatched someone’s bag. A woman yelled, “He took my bag!” and that’s when the chase really started. It was wild to see!
Our officers, whether walking or on horseback, are always prepared to respond. Recently, after a purse was stolen near West 72nd Street, one of our Mounted officers and her horse, Kelly, pursued the thief. Following a chase down the street and with information from a witness, they successfully recovered the purse and arrested the suspect.

The person suspected of theft, who was wearing shorts and a cropped t-shirt, tripped and fell in the street but kept running away.
Luckily, someone passing by managed to stop the suspect by the side of the road, giving the officer time to arrive and make the arrest.
NBC News reports that it’s still unknown what crimes the suspect will be accused of, even though the suspect insists they didn’t commit any wrongdoing in video footage obtained by the network.
“I’m okay, sir,” they said as the officer put them in handcuffs. “I didn’t take nobody’s stuff.”

Internet loses it over NYC cop chasing purse thief on horseback
The video quickly spread online, and people are applauding both the officer and their horse for responding so swiftly.
Someone jokingly commented on Instagram that the horse deserved an immediate promotion to detective, ranking it at the third grade level.
“Does the suspect get to ride on the horse to the police station?” another asked.
“I’ll look both ways before crossing the sidewalk after seeing this,” yet another said on X.
The New York City Police Department’s Mounted Unit is the oldest police unit of its kind in the country. Established in 1858, it began as a way to control horse-drawn carriages and roaming horses. Many of the first officers were Civil War veterans with experience as cavalry soldiers.

More than a century after it began, the NYPD still uses horses for policing, and its mounted unit is one of the biggest in the United States.
A recent police interaction with a 91-year-old woman became a viral social media moment. Officers were conducting a wellness check when they discovered she hadn’t been answering her phone because she was engrossed in playing a video game.
