“Now I don’t look up to him no more, I look through him.” For 38 years, Mickey Rourke has had nothing but harsh words for this great actor

It’s common for disagreements to happen on movie sets – strong personalities often clash, and it’s unrealistic to expect everyone to get along. Actor Mickey Rourke discovered it’s best not to become friendly with people he admires, especially when working with them.

Alan Parker’s 1987 film, *Angel Heart*, featured Robert De Niro and Mickey Rourke in a story set in 1955 New Orleans. The film follows private detective Harry Angel, who is hired by a man named Louis Cypher to track down singer Johnny Favorite. Harry takes the case without realizing the dark path the investigation will take.

Rourke expressed his enthusiasm about collaborating with De Niro, as revealed in old footage from the filming of *Angel Heart* (according to Allocine).

I realized I’d never truly focused like that before, because he’s the most intensely focused actor I’ve ever worked with. If you lose concentration for even a few seconds while working with him, he’ll immediately notice and you’ll be taken out of the scene.

I had become disillusioned with acting and didn’t have a very positive view of it. But working with him really inspired me and renewed my passion.

Despite being excited to work with Robert De Niro, Robert Rourke was disappointed with how things went. De Niro told him at the start of filming that they shouldn’t speak to each other on set, due to the nature of their characters (according to Page Six).

A few minutes later, Robert De Niro approached me and explained he thought it would be best if we didn’t interact. He said it would help maintain the authenticity of our characters in the film, and that meant no greetings or conversations. I was a little disappointed, as I really admired him.

Man, I was totally shocked to hear this. Mickey Rourke said he completely lost respect for Robert De Niro after something happened – someone I used to really look up to! He took whatever De Niro did or said super personally, and it really hurt his feelings. It’s crazy to think someone could feel that way about a legend like De Niro.

When I was training to be an actor, I used to idolize him, put him right up there with legends like Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. But not anymore. Now, I see right past him. I’ve clawed my way up from nothing, and he’s never known that struggle. I *lived* that hard life, so whenever I look at him, I just see straight through him – past all the fame and everything, right through to the other side.

Rourke apparently still resents De Niro after all these years. He says De Niro won’t work with him and even prevented him from being in *The Irishman*, despite Martin Scorsese supposedly offering him a part.

Legendary director Martin Scorsese approached me about a potential film featuring Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Chris Walken, and Robert De Niro. However, I was later informed by the casting director, through my manager, that Robert De Niro didn’t want to work with me on the project.

Robert De Niro’s representative, Stan Rosenfield, stated that producers Jane Rosenthal and Emma Tillinger Koskoff, along with casting director Ellen Lewis, confirmed Mickey Rourke was never offered a part in *The Irishman*, nor was he ever in consideration for a role. These statements were made in 2019.

A year later, Rourke again publicly criticized Robert De Niro. He posted on Instagram (the post has since been removed) calling De Niro a “crybaby” and vowing to humiliate him if they ever crossed paths, according to People magazine.

Robert De Niro, I’m addressing you directly. I heard you reportedly told the press that Mickey Rourke is a liar and talks nonsense. Let me be clear: you’re the first person to ever call me a liar publicly, and I’m not happy about it. I promise you, if I ever encounter you, I will publicly and severely embarrass you, and I swear on my family and everything I hold dear that I mean it.

Robert De Niro didn’t respond to the provocation and remained silent about the situation.
