Enthusiasts of traditional city-building games now have something to smile about. A fresh update has been released for the demo of Metropolis 1998, crafted by its creator, who focused on enhancing the behavior of citizens. Notable improvements in version v0.8.5 include:

  1. the map has been expanded 25 times, allowing for the construction of much larger cities;
  2. new features – added, among others, interaction sounds, the ability to place objects on roofs, and the option to adjust the width of zones;
  3. quality of life improvements – the user interface has been improved, guides for placing roads have been introduced, as well as an optional terrain grid.

In the future, the developer hinted at potential limitations on city population or map size due to the larger game map. Although it’s designed to maintain game stability, remember this is still a demonstration version. At present, players have unrestricted ability to grow their cities as they wish.

1998’s Metropolis is a game that takes inspiration from iconic titles like SimCity 2000, boasting isometric pixel art graphics and sophisticated city dweller simulation. Players can construct interior building layouts, control traffic in real-time, and witness the routines of virtual citizens.

The developer has scheduled the pre-release of this game in the last three months of 2025. They expect it to stay in this phase for approximately two years. In time, the game will be enhanced with additional features such as financial management and city construction. These new elements are projected to surpass current market expectations in terms of complexity and terrain adaptation.
