Norwegian True Crime ‘Escaping Bolivia,’ Starring Jakob Oftebro and Ella Øverbye, Boarded by REinvent (EXCLUSIVE)

As a passionate follower of gripping true crime narratives that delve deep into human resilience and the complexities of friendship, I eagerly anticipate the release of “Escaping Bolivia.” Having spent years researching and developing this captivating story, it’s heartening to see it finally come to life in front of the cameras.

The top sales company in Scandinavia, REinvent, has joined the production of Norway’s true-crime series “Escaping Bolivia,” which is being filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, following an initial shoot in Oslo.

Phenomenon (“Rod Knock”) and the long-established production house known as 4 ½ (“Out Stealing Horses”) are collaborating to create a television series for TV2 Norway, in conjunction with Germany’s public broadcaster NDR and Oslo Film Fund.

Anna Helmer serves as concept director for Lionsgate’s “Paradise Highway,” featuring Juliette Binoche. She collaborates closely with creator and scriptwriter Emily Beck, who is also involved in Netflix’s “Royalteen.” Lead roles in the six-episode series are filled by Jakob Oftebro (“Agent Hamilton”), Ella Øverbye (from Dag Johan Haugerud’s “Dreams”), Josephine Tetlie, Lisa Hovden, and Danish actor Joachim Fjelstrup (“The Girl With the Needle”).

The television series is based on the sensational drug incident involving three young Norwegian women aged 17, 18, and 21 years old. They were arrested in Bolivia in 2008 after being found with approximately 22 kilograms of cocaine in their luggage. Two of them successfully escaped – one accompanied by a journalist, while she had a child – but the third remained behind bars.

In the show, we trace the story of Ida, Michelle – her sister-in-law, and Cecilie, Ida’s lover. They are apprehended at Bolivia’s airport with their luggage containing cocaine. Their punishment is imprisonment in one of the world’s deadliest women’s prisons. It isn’t long before Ida realizes that she cannot rely on her acquaintances, nor does she have faith in the Norwegian authorities to secure her release. Instead, she begins devising a way to break free from captivity.

After eight years of progress in both development and study, it’s a wonderful sensation that we’ve now begun filming, commented Beck, who collaborated on the script with Helena Nielsen and Ingrid Haukelidsæter. “I have no doubt that ‘Escaping Bolivia’ will move, captivate, and provoke its audience,” she continued. The series revolves around themes of friendship, deceit, affection, and something extraordinary like motherhood and going to great lengths for those you cherish. At the same time, it also explores what one might do and give up in order to save oneself while growing up in prison.

Helene Aurø, REinvent’s sales and marketing director stated with pride: “We’re thrilled to have chosen ‘Escaping Bolivia.’ This story is truly captivating, and we believe it deserves to be shared globally. We anticipate that the series will resonate with audiences worldwide when it arrives towards the end of 2025.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that among the premium titles showcased by REinvent at Mipcom, there’s the Finnish thriller drama “L/over.” This series is a groundbreaking live-action fiction production, spearheaded by Marika Makaroff, founder of Gutsy Animations, best known for the beloved “Moominvalley” series. The series, featuring Krista Kosonen and Jani Volanen, is set to debut on MTV3/C More in Finland in 2025.
