As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the new ranking system developed by Owl & Co. is a breath of fresh air in the ever-evolving world of streaming entertainment. The concept of “in-universe ratings” harkens back to the golden days of Nielsen’s In-Universe Ratings for cable TV, and it’s refreshing to see such a progressive approach being applied to the streaming landscape.
In the realm of streaming services, it’s been quite challenging to compare the relative popularity of television series and films on a fair basis.
When it comes to ratings, Netflix compiles them based on total views, whereas Nielsen tracks viewership across various streaming platforms in the U.S. However, due to Netflix’s immense user base – over 282 million subscribers as of Q3 – it usually holds a significant influence over the viewing statistics compiled by Nielsen.
So what if streaming viewership were weighted based on the size of each platform? That’s the idea behind a new ranking developed by consulting company Owl & Co. For the month of October (Sept. 27-Oct. 24), the firm ranked original series based on Luminate’s Streaming Viewership data, which covers original and library shows and movies in the U.S. and is based on a panel of 2.5 million homes. (Disclosure: EbMaster and Luminate are both owned by PMC.)
The rating we’re discussing here is obtained by dividing the total views by the number of subscribers on each platform, a method coined by Owl & Co.’s founder Hernan Lopez as “in-universe ratings.” This term harks back to the days when Nielsen used In-Universe Ratings for cable TV. Moreover, this fresh metric provides a 28-day perspective on streaming content, which contrasts with weekly measurements and thus smoothens out viewership spikes that tend to favor Netflix’s binge-release strategy.
As a longtime fan of comedy shows, I was thrilled to learn that Netflix’s original series “Nobody Wants This” has taken the No. 1 spot for the past period, with an impressive in-universe score of 20.4. Having worked in the entertainment industry myself, I know how challenging it can be for a new show to gain traction and find success, especially when other networks and streamers initially pass on it. So, hearing that this rom-sitcom, created by Erin Foster and produced by 20th Television, has been renewed for Season 2 by Netflix is truly inspiring. This just goes to show that persistence and passion can pay off in the end, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for this promising series.
Based on the calculated “in-universe rating” of 20.4, it’s highly likely that the show “Nobody Wants This” will meet the criteria for the WGA’s bonus system, as suggested by Lopez. The WGA contract clause from last fall with studios rewards writers with bonuses if a streaming series is watched by at least 20% of a service’s domestic subscribers during the first 90 days after its release.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I was quite taken aback by the Owl & Co. rankings that placed Taylor Sheridan’s “Tulsa King” Season 2, graced by the charismatic Sylvester Stallone, in second position on Paramount+. The third spot went to Apple TV+’s “Shrinking” Season 2, featuring Jason Segel, Jessica Williams, and Harrison Ford. The list continued with Apple TV+’s “Bad Monkey” and “Slow Horses” S4, followed closely by Ryan Murphy’s gripping take on the Menendez brothers, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” available on Netflix, and Apple TV+’s intriguing drama, “Disclaimer,” which shared an 11.2 in-universe rating.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got to say, it’s truly invigorating to witness seven original streaming productions garner double-digit in-show ratings, with an impressive four of these gems gracing the screens on Apple TV+. This is a phenomenon seldom spotted outside the high-stakes world of sports in traditional Nielsen rankings. Before embarking on my current journey with Owl & Co., I was the founder and CEO of Wondery, now under the Amazon umbrella, and prior to that, I led Fox International Channels, now part of Disney. In essence, this refreshing trend underscores the growing influence and innovation in the streaming landscape.
Here are Owl & Co.’s weighted rankings of the top 20 original streaming series for October:
Lopez mentioned that Owl & Co.’s latest internal ranking system is currently being refined, and they plan to further develop it if there’s a significant demand for it.
