On Monday, Israeli soldiers hindered a guided tour for international media, arranged by filmmakers Basel Adra and Yuval Abraham of “No Other Land,” thereby barring journalists from accessing the West Bank village depicted in their Academy Award-winning documentary.
The film shows the Israeli government’s attempts to make Palestinians from Masafer Yatta in the southern part of the West Bank abandon their homes. The filmmakers had invited several local and foreign journalists to observe alleged escalating violence by Israeli settlers and destruction at At-Tuwani, Adra’s village. However, these journalists and a Palestinian Authority group were prevented by Israeli military forces, who claimed they needed to establish a checkpoint under a warrant.
In a recent social media post, I found myself addressing Israeli troops, expressing my concern over their actions: “You’re aware they’re journalists. They’ve come to witness the devastation in Masafer Yatta – the destruction your actions are causing to this community. The aggressive behavior of settlers poses a real threat.
An Israeli military official justifies the prohibition of journalists from entering the West Bank by stating it’s necessary to preserve “stability” or “control” in the region.
Following the military’s destruction of a village and opening it up for settlers, they have been preventing access for numerous international journalists, claiming that they are prohibited from entering Masafer Yatta and visiting the home of @basel_adra.

During the ’90s, Masafer Yatta was marked as a zone for live-fire military training, giving full control to the Israeli army. The West Bank is inhabited by approximately 3 million Palestinians and an additional 500,000 Israelis residing in settlements, which are deemed illegal according to international law.
In March, just a few weeks following the Oscar win for “No Other Land” as the best documentary, Hamdan Ballal, one of its co-directors (alongside Adra, Abraham, and Rachel Szor), was brutally assaulted by Israeli settlers near his village. After the attack, he was taken into custody and detained at a military facility overnight.
Abraham stated to the French news agency AFP, who were present due to an invitation for a media tour, that the police officers and soldiers currently on site, instead of preventing international media, often become involved in the settler violence themselves.
Abraham expressed his hope that the Oscar win for “No Other Land” might encourage international intervention to halt the violence in Masafer Yatta. Sadly, he stated, while the world is now aware of the situation, there seems to be little action taken.
