LATEST NEWS: As per the recent update shared by co-director Yuval Abraham, Hamdan Ballal, who jointly directed the Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land” about Israel and Palestine, has been released.
Abraham shared on X yesterday that after spending the entire night in custody at a military facility, enduring physical abuse, Hamdan Ballal has been released and is now preparing to return home to his loved ones.
I’ve been supporting a petition on Change.org that aims to secure the release of Hamdan Ballal, a key figure in the Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land” about Israel and Palestine. Over 3,700 people have already signed in solidarity.
Ballal has allegedly gone missing following an attack, as suggested by a string of posts from co-director Yuval Abraham on platform X.
Members of the international film industry are imploring for the swift liberation and security of filmmaker Hamdan Ballal, a key figure in ‘No Other Land’ production, which won this year’s Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
We are deeply troubled by the news that Mr. Ballal was violently ejected from an ambulance by the Israeli military after a vicious assault by settlers, with no clear details about his location since then. This kind of treatment towards a globally recognized filmmaker seriously threatens artistic liberty, human rights, and free speech – principles essential to democratic societies.
The statement asks for an urgent action to ensure Ballal’s protection, speedy release, reuniting him with his family, and providing him with a lawyer, as indicated in the petition.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that an impressive list of industry heavyweights have added their signatures to this petition. Names like Roger Ross Williams, Alex Gibney, Christine Vachon, Liz Garbus, Ezra Edelman, Dan Cogan, and many more have joined forces. These are the visionaries who’ve brought us groundbreaking documentaries that have shaped our understanding of the world. I can’t wait to see what impact this collective voice will bring about!
In a collaborative effort by Israelis and Palestinians, “No Other Land” tells the tale of a Palestinian family residing in the West Bank who have their home demolished by the Israeli authorities, leaving them homeless. However, amidst the challenging circumstances, an Israeli journalist named Adra and Abraham forge an unexpected bond, and they jointly work to chronicle this heartrending story.
The movie made its debut at the Berlin Film Festival last year, winning both the top jury award for documentaries and the audience’s favorite prize. It went on to receive further critical acclaim during the autumn festival season, screening at Toronto, Vancouver, and New York film festivals. Regrettably, the movie hasn’t found a U.S. distributor yet, causing its creators to self-distribute the film in New York City on January 31 and Los Angeles on February 7.
