Nioh 3 features a vast world with plenty to discover, including hidden areas and secret routes. However, progress is sometimes blocked by locked doors requiring specific keys to unlock.
Many players exploring Mikatagahara will find a locked gate and naturally start looking for a key to open it. However, they’ll quickly discover there isn’t one to be found.
This gate is locked because it’s connected to the main story. If you’re trying to figure out how to unlock the Mikatagahara gate in Nioh 3, this guide will help.
Unlocking the Locked Gate in Mikatagahara in Nioh 3

Okay, so if you’re trying to get through that locked gate in Mikatagahara in Nioh 3, you’ll need to keep playing the main story. Specifically, you have to finish the “Battle of Futamata Castle” quest. You can start this quest once you’ve beaten Jakotsu-baba in the first Crucible. It’s a pretty key part of the story, so you can’t miss it!
Once you finish “The Battle of Futamata Castle,” talk to Hattori Hanzo at Hamamatsu Castle to start the next quest, “The Battle of Mikatagahara.” During this new quest, you’ll be able to go through the gate – it will be open this time, so you won’t need a key. I’ve included a map showing where the gate is located below.
This gate doesn’t lead anywhere significant on its own, but opening it lets you continue the Battle of Mikatagahara questline. Completing this quest will eventually lead to a tough fight against Takeda Shingen, a challenging early-game boss in Nioh 3. Make sure you’re well-equipped with your strongest weapon and armor before you face him.
The Battle of Mikatagahara Quest Rewards
After completing the “A Fiery Invasion” side quest – the Battle of Mikatagahara – you’ll face Takeda Shingen in the Crucible. He’s a tough opponent, so be prepared with plenty of Elixirs and items that protect against fire and poison.
Once you defeat Takeda Shingen, you’ll finish the Battle of Mikatagahara quest in Nioh 3. You’ll be rewarded with Samurai Locks, the Smithing Text for the Basket Blade & Boar Cutter, and Shingen’s Fan. You’ll also get a variety of other loot, ranging from Rare to Exotic quality, but the specific items you receive will be randomly generated.
You’ll gain a new defensive move called Burst Breaks, letting you counter powerful Burst Attacks using your Guardian Spirit Skill instead of changing fighting styles. Though I still like the original method, Burst Breaks are helpful because they let you avoid switching styles constantly.
Finally, you can permanently destroy the Crucible, restoring the region to normal. After that, you’ll need to defeat Takeda Shingen in his more powerful second form during the “Battle of Saigagake” quest. He’s a tough opponent this time, so it’s a good idea to spend some time leveling up your character and upgrading your equipment at the Blacksmith before you fight him.
