As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent development with Alarmo has me absolutely thrilled! The fact that a creative mind like GaryOderNichts, who’s known for his Wii U hacking prowess, has managed to crack open this seemingly innocuous alarm clock is nothing short of amazing.

Earlier this month, Nintendo announced and released Alarmo, an alarm clock themed with sounds and pictures from some of the company’s fan-favorite video game franchises. And while only Nintendo Switch games are currently available as themes, a hacker has already found a way to run custom code on the Alarmo.

User GaryOderNichts, recognized for his skills in deciphering and manipulating the Wii U system, showcased his modification of the Alarmo app on device X. Instead of displaying one of Nintendo’s designated themes, he presented an image of a cat as the alarm clock.

With a Nintendo Alarmo, you can execute custom code through a USB connection, all without needing to open the device! For more information, check out this blog post.

GaryOderNichts additionally shared a detailed account on his blog about how he managed the hack on the Alarmo device. In essence, the procedure involved decrypting and uploading the firmware onto an external USB before gaining access to its core functions. Extracting the firmware file from the Alarmo makes it possible for users to load customized codes via a USB drive. However, there might be restrictions on what can be installed on an Alarmo since it wasn’t initially designed for gaming purposes. This hack could pave the way for users to upload their own custom themes, providing Nintendo doesn’t implement measures in future Alarmo firmware updates to prevent this kind of modification.

At present, you can find the game Alarmo at Nintendo retail outlets and for subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online. Yet, the general release of Alarmo is not scheduled until next year. In the interim, Nintendo’s latest music app has been launched, providing enthusiasts with music to enjoy while we wait for updates regarding the Switch 2.
