For some time now, subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online have been playing re-released games from numerous retro consoles. Yet, it appears that not all these games on the service are everlasting. Recently, Nintendo announced that they will take down Super Formation Soccer for Super Famicom, more commonly known as Super Soccer in the US, from the Switch Online platform in Japan on March 28th. However, this change doesn’t affect the game’s availability outside of Japan.
For the very first time, a game is set to be taken out from the Switch Online retro game library, according to VGC. However, it’s important to mention that Nintendo has not yet disclosed any intentions to remove Super Soccer from the European and North American versions of the retro library, so for now, you can continue playing it in those regions.
It’s unclear at this point why the Japanese version of the game is being taken down from the service, or if this could be a precursor to more removals. Notably, the Super Formation Soccer franchise seems to belong to Spike Chunsoft, while Super Soccer was released by Nintendo. This might suggest a discrepancy in regional ownership rights. In today’s digital gaming landscape, games can vanish for numerous reasons.
In simpler terms, well-known video game creator Hideki Kamiya expressed his disapproval of a certain decision in a recent tweet. His message translated to “Hey hey hey… It seems subscriptions aren’t the way after all.” He further added, “Come on, revive the Virtual Console again.” The Virtual Console service for Wii, Wii U, and 3DS systems had games removed over time, but those who purchased these deleted games (such as Street Fighter 2) were still able to play them afterward.
