As a seasoned gamer with fond memories of spending countless hours exploring the vibrant worlds of Super Mario, I was absolutely thrilled to hear about Nintendo and LEGO’s latest collaboration: the Mario & Yoshi set inspired by Super Mario World. The first day of San Diego Comic-Con 2024 brought us a multitude of exciting announcements, but this one really stole my heart.
The San Diego Comic-Con 2024 has begun with a bang as throngs of attendees from various parts of the world flock to the San Diego Convention Center for the yearly genre extravaganza. The initial day has ended, and major media outlets have reported on numerous developments. Notably, Nintendo and LEGO made an announcement that left Mario enthusiasts around the globe elated.
At the opening of SCC 2024, LEGO introduced a number of new playsets inspired by well-known intellectual properties such as Dungeons & Dragons, Minecraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Star Wars. Additionally, they showcased a fresh collaboration with Nintendo, featuring toys based on Mario characters and settings, introducing the next 2D brick representation in this partnership.
At SDCC 2024, the LEGO showroom featured the new Mario & Yoshi set. This collection included the lovable dinosaur Yoshi, who, as stated by Nintendo, pays tribute to his initial appearance by helping Mario embark on exciting adventures. The latest release celebrates one of Mario’s most renowned gaming experiences, Super Mario World, with its design reminiscent of the game’s pixelated graphics.

Based on LEGO Super Mario senior designer Carl Merriam’s account, the team aimed to recreate the sprite animations from Super Mario World in this set. To accomplish this, they translated the pixel art into LEGO bricks and incorporated a function that allows Caped Mario to ride on Yoshi’s back as he runs.
The design team went the extra mile with the pixelated Yoshi figurine, boasting a distinctive feature that will surely please potential buyers and Yoshi enthusiasts, as Merriam noted. Plus, for an added touch of excitement, we included a dial to make Yoshi’s tongue extend in and out—just as it does in the game!
