Nintendo Takes Action Against Scalpers Ahead of Switch 2 Launch!

Nintendo is implementing additional measures to stop unscrupulous individuals from buying the upcoming Switch 2 in bulk and then re-selling it at inflated prices on online auction and flea market platforms.

On their official site, it’s been revealed that Nintendo Japan is partnering with Mercari, Yahoo Auctions (or Yahoo! Flea Market), and Rakuten-Rakuma to combat the unauthorized resale of upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 systems.

According to the official announcement, Nintendo and three service partners plan to implement strategies to eliminate fraudulent advertisements of Nintendo goods, such as the Nintendo Switch 2, which breach their respective user agreements. This will involve the providers actively deleting listings and creating a joint system for exchanging information.

Additionally, Yahoo Auctions/Yahoo Flea Market has banned all Switch 2 console listings.

Nintendo Japan imposes new anti-scalping restrictions

This latest step was taken by the Japanese video game company only a month ago, imposing strict limitations on purchases made through their My Nintendo Store. Going back to April, fans were compelled to possess a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, submit 50 hours of gaming data, and be at least 18 years old in order to pre-order the upcoming Switch 2.

Due to an incredibly high interest, the demand for the new Nintendo Switch 2 exceeded expectations, causing a shortage that resulted in many pre-orders going unfilled. In response, Nintendo’s President apologized and mentioned that over two million pre-order requests were received just from Japan.

It’s not hard to see that this situation presents an enticing opportunity for resellers, or scalpers, due to the massive demand and high resale value. Unfortunately, scalping has been a significant issue in the US market, with consoles being listed for over $700 on eBay.

Although it’s not clear if Nintendo America will adopt similar strategies later on, there’s optimism that this latest action may deter scalpers in Japan in the meantime.

As we eagerly count down the days till the June 5 launch, let’s not forget to explore the new and improved games coming to the Switch 2! Don’t miss out on both free and premium updates designed to elevate your gaming experience.
