Following its unveiling during the Nintendo Direct in late March, the Virtual Game Card update for the initial Nintendo Switch is now active. Yet, there’s buzz about a change that came with this update: a security measure has been implemented that prevents multiple Nintendo Switch systems from sharing one digital game copy for online play. As a result, each Switch system must now purchase its own individual copy of the game.
As a devoted gamer, I’ve noticed an interesting change in how Nintendo Accounts function on the Switch, as per Eurogamer‘s report. Previously, it was possible for a single account to be logged into two different Switch devices and both play the same game online together. However, after the recent update, if one Switch is already playing an online game using that account, the other device can no longer join the session.
As a gamer, I’ve stumbled upon an exciting finding! Eurogamer has uncovered a nifty trick that lets two Nintendo Switch systems play the same game offline, thanks to a fresh new feature called Online Licenses in the console settings.
- The Switch console that received the Virtual Game Card must play the game offline
- This will allow the Switch console that sent the Game Card to play the same game, as the console doesn’t recognize offline play, and therefore will not be able to “see” the Virtual Game Card in use by the console that received it.
Various internet platforms such as ResetEra and Reddit have expressed dissatisfaction with the recent change, as one Reddit user, Synkhe, points out that it will now require families with multiple Nintendo Switch consoles to purchase separate copies of a game for each system if they want to keep playing online. Previously, sharing digital games between systems helped save money, since each game essentially functioned as two copies. However, this update means these costs will double for all future games.
It’s been announced that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch on June 5, will include a feature called GameShare. This feature will be accessible for select games, but it requires both Switch consoles to be linked to the same local Wi-Fi network in order to function.
