Nintendo Switch 2’s Price Roasted By Duolingo

In the United States, the Switch 2 retails at $450 individually. However, if you opt for a package deal that includes Mario Kart World as well, the price jumps up to $500. After Nintendo revealed the price during their Nintendo Direct presentation this week, various individuals expressed their opinions on it. Now, different brands are starting to share their thoughts on the matter.

Duolingo, the language-learning platform, playfully tweeted this week, “Save $197 by learning Japanese, gamers!” This humorously suggests that if you master Japanese, you’ll effectively pay less for Nintendo’s upcoming console, which is priced at approximately $340. However, since it’s region-specific and only offers Japanese as the default language, learning Japanese could potentially be a cost-effective choice for gamers!

During the inaugural Nintendo Treehouse Live event for the Switch 2 this week, users flooded the comment section imploring the company to reduce the system’s price. However, given Nintendo’s typical strategy, it seems unlikely that they will lower the price. Some analysts predict that any potential price adjustments might not occur until at least 2030.

It was anticipated that the new Switch 2 model would cost more than the original (which was priced at $300 in 2017), and this higher price is a result of increased costs due to tariffs and pricier components. Some speculate that Nintendo may have felt confident to set a higher price after seeing Sony’s PS5 Pro priced at $700, while others suggest that Nintendo simply chooses to charge $450+ for the Switch 2 because it has the ability to do so.

According to analyst Serkan Toto, Nintendo believes it’s justified in setting this price due to the confidence that consumers are willing to make the purchase at this cost.

In its initial year, the Switch 2 is anticipated to fly off shelves rapidly, driven by accumulated demand and the tendency of new items to perform robustly in the market, especially when the buying audience is not overly price-sensitive. However, experts predict that as time progresses, the Switch 2’s customer base may shift towards an older demographic or wealthier individuals, primarily due to its higher price point. Ultimately, it’s projected that the Switch 2 won’t achieve the same level of success as the original Switch, which has surpassed sales of 150 million units globally.

Two popular games, notably Mario Kart World, are drawing criticism for their high price tags. Particularly noteworthy is its digital version priced at $80, which is approximately $10-$20 more than the standard cost of AAA games currently. Nintendo has yet to provide a justification or response regarding this price hike, but a retailer argues that video game prices must increase to cover escalating development and manufacturing expenses.
