In its recent Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo revealed specifics about the forthcoming Switch 2’s hardware. These details encompass support for High Dynamic Range (HDR), 4K resolution when docked, a frame rate of up to 120 frames per second in compatible games when not using 4K, and magnetic Joy-Con controllers.
The new Switch 2 LCD screen measures 7.9 inches, making it larger than its previous version, yet the overall dimensions of the device remain the same as the original Switch in terms of thickness. The screen improvement offers a resolution of 1080p in handheld mode and features an adjustable kickstand and two USB-C ports – one on top and another at the bottom. In docking mode, the Switch 2 will support 4K resolution (fixed at 60fps), although some titles may run up to 120fps when not in 4K. The upgraded dock includes a built-in fan for cooling purposes.
The upgrades aren’t confined to just the screen and dock for the Switch 2. Intriguingly, the Joy-Con controllers, now called Joy-Con 2, will adhere magnetically to the console. There’s a release button on the back of the controllers, making it effortless to detach them when needed. Each Joy-Con 2 also boasts larger control sticks and bigger SL and SR buttons, offering enhanced comfort for single-controller horizontal play.
Nintendo has also verified that the upcoming Switch 2 console will support mouse input, enabling users to utilize its Joy-Con 2 controllers much like a computer mouse for select games. Moreover, the Switch 2 boasts a built-in microphone equipped with noise-canceling technology and enhanced speakers to optimize its new GameChat functionality, which can be triggered using the “C” button on the right Joy-Con 2 controller.
Regarding storage capacity, the upcoming Switch 2 model is expected to boast a whopping eight times more space compared to its predecessor. This means it will pack a solid 256GB of internal storage, ensuring smoother gameplay and faster data transfers. Nintendo has also announced that the new SSD will handle read and write operations at a speedier pace than the original Switch’s SSD.
Apart from unveiling fresh insights regarding the Switch 2’s internal components, Nintendo also disclosed upcoming titles such as Mario Kart World, along with enhancements slated for the initial Switch releases, including The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
