I was thrilled to catch a glimpse of Nintendo’s much-anticipated follow-up to the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch 2, during its extensive April Direct presentation. Not only did they offer a more detailed peek at the hardware, but they also reassured us Switch 1 owners that we can seamlessly transfer our system data to the new console when it launches.
To migrate your data from your initial Nintendo Switch to the new Switch 2, follow these steps:
1. Log into your Nintendo Account on both consoles.
2. On the original Switch, access the System Settings menu and select “System Transfer”.
3. Choose the option to transfer data to a new console.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the two consoles wirelessly or with a LAN cable.
5. Select the data you want to transfer, such as game saves, digital titles, user profiles, screenshots, settings, and parental controls.
6. Confirm your selection and initiate the transfer process.
7. Once the transfer is complete, set up your new Switch 2 with your preferred language and other preferences.
8. You can now enjoy your transferred data on the new Nintendo Switch 2!
According to the instructions provided on the Switch 2 Transfer Guide, it’s essential that your internet connection is active during a system transfer. After the transfer process finishes, any digital Switch 1 games you own will automatically re-download onto the new Switch 2 device, enabling you to continue from where you previously left off on the fresh system.
On top of transferring your games, select titles initially available on Switch 1 such as Super Mario Odyssey, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will receive free upgrades for Switch 2. Nintendo plans to offer paid upgrades for certain games like Super Mario Party Jamboree and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on Switch 2, which will bring new features and enhancements when played on this new system.
The anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2 is set for June 5, with a retail price tag of $450 USD. Pre-orders for this new system will commence on April 9.
