As a devoted player, I’ve found that the upgraded Switch feels bulkier and heavier compared to its initial version. However, surprisingly, my hands never experienced any cramping even during extended Mario Kart World sessions. In terms of comfort, it outperforms the Steam Deck significantly, as Valve’s console tends to need something propped beneath it for prolonged gaming hours due to its cumbersome design.
Features
Everything has been enhanced in the latest model, referred to as Switch 2. It boasts an improved 7.9-inch 1080p LCD display, features a custom NVIDIA processor for seamless 4K gaming at 60 frames per second, includes magnetic Joy-Cons with mouse functionality, and offers 256 GB of storage that can be expanded using a microSD Express card.
Screen
Instead of the original Nintendo Switch’s 720p non-OLED display, the new Switch 2 boasts a bigger 7.9-inch LCD screen that delivers a significantly brighter and clearer image. Although the gaming experience on the Switch 2 may not be as vivid as the Switch and Steam Deck’s OLED versions, it comes quite close due to its larger screen size and 1080p graphics.
120 Hz and adjustable refresh rates significantly enhanced the smoothness of Mario Kart World, with vibrant special effects, clearly defined racetracks, and vivid characters all appearing stunningly beautiful. This was even more noticeable when playing in docked mode on a 4K television, as the resolution increase further heightened the clarity of the on-screen activity.
Controls
A significant alteration in Switch 2 lies with its Joy-Con controllers. Unlike earlier versions that slid onto the screens’ sides, these new controllers are securely positioned by being inserted and held in place using magnets rather than relying on a slide mechanism.
This significant improvement makes the controllers feel securely fastened to the screen instead of loose, which was a noticeable change I appreciated. Additionally, I found the magnetic connection to be sturdy, with the satisfying click adding to its appeal, and any concerns about the Joy-Cons slipping and disrupting my gaming time were effectively addressed.
As a gamer, I’ve been blown away by the enhanced HD Rumble technology from Nintendo. The haptic feedback is so lifelike now that I find myself doubting whether I’m feeling the vibrations of a game or if I’ve somehow managed to bring maracas into my living room without realizing it! It’s got me wondering if this review is just a game, or if I might be getting a little too immersed in the gaming world.
It would be great if Nintendo expands the use of this feature beyond being confined to party games like the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour and Mario Party, and instead explores other applications for it.
Mouse mode
The miniature controllers now feature a new function known as “mouse mode.” To use it, simply lay the Joy-Con units horizontally on a flat surface and slide them around like a traditional mouse.
In my assessment, I focused primarily on evaluating the mouse controls while navigating the home screen and playing mini-games within the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour. At this point, there’s no available customization option. However, everything seems to be running smoothly for now.
In one mini-game, I had to navigate a small UFO using mouse control, skillfully dodging a hail of spiked balls falling from above. The second minigame required me to steer a tiny silver ball towards a circular target at the screen’s bottom, making sure not to collide with the electric obstacles along the way.
As an enthusiast, let me share my concern: A single Joy-Con feels significantly compact compared to a standard computer mouse. During extended gaming sessions, this discrepancy in size could potentially lead to discomfort. This is especially relevant if you’re not intending to use your Switch 2 while it’s stationary at a desk.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled about Nintendo revealing that mouse controls could boost precision in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. I can’t wait to witness how other games leverage this feature. Will it become a passing fad like the Wii’s motion controls or will it prove to be an enduring asset for Nintendo games? Only time will tell.
Gaming performance
In terms of performance, I didn’t encounter significant dips, lag, or sluggishness while playing Mario Kart World. The game managed 24-player races flawlessly, and it was impressive to observe that the frame rate on the Switch 2 stayed consistent, even during hectic gameplay scenes. This smoothness was maintained in handheld mode as well, when playing two-player splitscreen.
After an exhilarating spin in Mario Kart: World, diving back into regular Nintendo Switch games felt a bit rugged. I fired up The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on my original Switch to appreciate the contrast, and let me tell you, the upgraded Switch 2 version has significantly boosted both resolution and performance, making the gameplay smoother than ever.
While conducting tests, I returned to the notorious Korok Forest, a place known for FPS troubles. To my delight, I noticed that the game now runs smoothly instead of lagging. Moreover, the visual textures in the environment seem more defined, and load times have noticeably decreased.
It’s noticeable when moving towards Sheikah Towers; trimming a few seconds off is definitely beneficial, particularly in a game that can consume hundreds of hours. The improvement in quality and speed is stark, and it’s evident these upgraded editions of Switch favorites are now the best way to experience these games.
Battery
As a gamer myself, it’s important to mention that the enhanced graphical capabilities of the Switch 2 take a toll on its battery life. Nintendo has indicated that gameplay duration can vary from two to six hours, and I managed to get about two hours and forty minutes out of Mario Kart World without adjusting the brightness settings.
The non-OLED Switch may not meet your expectations regarding battery life, as it only offers about 2.5 to 6.5 hours of gameplay, whereas the OLED model provides between 4 and 9 hours, so keep that in mind when making your choice.
Users who own the Steam Deck OLED model shouldn’t be taken aback by the battery life, as Valve’s portable gaming powerhouse provides only about one to two hours of playtime for graphically demanding games like Elden Ring and Skyrim.
Regardless of the choice made, the noticeable decline in battery life is less than perfect for Nintendo enthusiasts anticipating to travel without recharging. Consequently, it might be advisable to pack your charger or a suitable power bank for prolonged journeys to ensure you can keep it charged.
The games
As a gaming enthusiast, experiencing Nintendo classics in stunning 4K resolution at a smooth 60 FPS is an absolute dream realized. The enhanced power and commitment to welcoming more third-party games makes the Nintendo Switch a truly tempting acquisition. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wish for more exclusive titles at launch, but starting off with Breath of the Wild and 1-2 Switch wasn’t too shabby in the long run.
Given that price point of $449, it’s only fair to anticipate a more robust offering from Nintendo. While they are indeed strengthening their launch-day lineup by upgrading Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom graphically, an additional game not previously available on other consoles would have been a delightful addition.
The large number of pre-orders for Switch indicates that there’s still a strong desire among people to get their hands on this more expensive, upgraded model as soon as it hits the market. And it’s understandable why. Mario Kart World provides plenty of offline and multiplayer content for players to explore, while the improved versions of both Zelda games promise to keep both new and dedicated fans entertained for countless hours.
This year’s lineup features a significant number of popular titles from third-party developers. Some of the highly anticipated ones include Cyberpunk: 2077, Street Fighter 6, and Hogwarts Legacy. There’s no lack of gaming options for you here!
Compared to its predecessor, the new Nintendo Switch offers superior performance and graphics, making it an attractive choice for those seeking a powerful gaming device from Nintendo. Diehard fans of Mario Kart will undoubtedly want this latest console as soon as possible, and it won’t let down early adopters. The new model also promises exciting exclusives like Duskbloods by FromSoftware, Metroid Prime 4, and future Zelda titles.
However, the question remains whether it’s an essential purchase for everyone else. When the original Switch was fresh, affordable, and under $300, the case could be made for everyone to upgrade. But now that it costs over $400, families may hesitate to make the switch when their children can already play popular games like Mario Kart, Zelda, and Pokémon on the go.
Adults who found the original Switch reminiscent of a kids’ first console might be drawn to this more mature version, though. Ultimately, we’re all Nintendo fans in one way or another!
Verdict
As a dedicated gamer myself, it’s tough not to view the Switch 2 as just an improvement on its predecessor. Nintendo seems to have borrowed a page straight out of Sony and Microsoft’s manuals, introducing a console that sports a familiar design but boasts a more powerful engine under the hood.
As a gamer myself, I’d say it’s smart of Nintendo to take a step back and refocus on the success of the original Switch. It’s like them saying, “We’ve got a good thing going, let’s make it even better.” This approach gives us, the fans, a chance to enjoy an even stronger Nintendo Switch 2.
