Disclosed pictures and clips of the Joycon controllers for the upcoming Switch 2 have unveiled a wealth of fresh details regarding the Nintendo gaming device.
Initially, the presence of locks for controllers suggests that the new Switch model may retain a similar design as its predecessor. However, given the extended and bulkier appearance of these controllers, it’s plausible to anticipate that the Switch 2 could potentially be a larger device compared to the original.
As a gaming enthusiast, it’s clear that Nintendo’s decision to persist with their mobile hybrid console format is no shock – after all, it’s been a winning formula for them. However, there are certain controller features that have me raising an eyebrow or two. Now that we’ve got more than just a sneaky logo to go on, let’s delve deeper into what this new device might bring to the table.
These controllers are undergoing various changes, from incorporating an optical sensor to developing a novel locking system. Here’s what we currently understand.
Joycon leaks confirm Nintendo Switch 2 features
The initial disclosure about the Joycon leaks originated from a forum post on Baidu Tieba, a Chinese platform that’s been operational for more than two decades. This leak provides a glimpse of both the side, back, and even a partial view of the front of the controller.
Despite appearing authentic, some observant users discovered a serial number embedded on the item. Regrettably for the leaker, this code could potentially lead to their identification. However, it also provides evidence that the leaks are indeed genuine.
Checking the serial number may not reveal the specific product details, however, it will provide a distinct message compared to entering a random number. When you input the serial number on that device, it triggers a response, even though it won’t show the complete product information.
So, what do these controllers look like?
Here’s a comparison between old and new Joy-con.
Is that a new optical / IR sensor??

In my gaming world, these new Joycons feel beefier compared to their predecessors. Instead of slipping them into the console as we did before, they seem to fit snugly and lock into place, possibly by pressing the button beneath the shoulder button to release them.
Furthermore, the hidden buttons inside the controller have been significantly enlarged compared to earlier versions, enhancing ease of use when playing with a single Joycon.
Another significant modification includes an optical sensor placed on the controller’s side, but its purpose remains unspecified at the moment.
Although unfortunately we can’t see the front of the Joycon in the leaked images, it seems evident that the Joycons for the Switch 2 will boast a greater array of features compared to the initial model.
