Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons Won’t Have Drift-Proof Tech, Company Confirms

As an enthusiastic gamer, I’m glad to share some exciting news about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons! Contrary to what many of us were hoping for, they won’t be equipped with hall effect joysticks, known for their effectiveness in preventing stick drift. However, it’s important to remember that Nintendo is always innovating and striving to improve its products, so we can expect something equally impressive from the Switch 2 Joy-Cons!

The Nintendo Switch console is incredibly popular, yet a significant number of users have encountered substantial problems with the stick drifting on their Joy-Con controllers.

If your device has such issues, you can return it to the manufacturer’s repair center for a complimentary swap, yet this may not resolve the problem. On the other hand, utilizing hall effect joysticks might significantly alleviate stick drift almost entirely.

Instead of conventional sticks that employ a physical contact point prone to wearing out, leading to stick drift, HE sensors employ magnets, eliminating the need for a contact point, which significantly reduces or even prevents wear-and-tear.

As an ardent admirer, I had pinned my hopes high that the Switch 2 would incorporate hall effect joysticks within the Joy-Con 2, aiming to address the stick drift issue prevalent in the original controllers. However, Nintendo has officially announced that these joysticks won’t be a part of the new console, leaving me with a bit of disappointment, but always eager for what other innovations it might bring!

Switch 2 Joy-Cons have been designed from the ground up

In an interview conducted by NintendoLife, they directly inquired from Nintendo of America’s Nate Bihldorff if the Joy-Con 2’s joysticks utilize hall effect sensors or not.

Nate said, ‘Actually, the new Joy-Con 2 controllers were built completely anew. Unlike those with Hall Effect sticks, they offer a fantastic feel.’

As a dedicated Nintendo Switch gamer, I can’t help but feel a little disappointed about the absence of an upgraded Switch 2 in the near future. Yet, there’s a silver lining: the new Joy-Cons might just be more resistant to that pesky stick drift issue we’ve all encountered at some point. But, unfortunately, it’s something we’ll only know for sure once the console hits shelves this coming June.

It’s a mystery why they chose not to include HE sensors in the Joy-Con 2, but it’s reasonable to speculate that the method of their attachment to the screen could be a factor.

Rather than relying on a rail system as in the original design, the latest controllers utilize a powerful magnet for attachment to the tablet. There’s a possibility that the magnetic joysticks, combined with this attachment method, may have resulted in interference with the control functions.

As of now, Nintendo has kept details about the Switch 2’s internal components under wraps. However, Nvidia has hinted at some advanced features such as Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and Ray Tracing, which are typically found in top-tier PC graphics cards, to be included in the upcoming console.
