In June, a fresh GameCube controller is scheduled to debut alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 console, but keep in mind that it’s only compatible with classic GameCube games. Unlike controllers such as the NES, SNES, and Genesis, which can work on various games beyond their intended ones (based on input requirements), the GameCube controller is unique in its compatibility limitations.
The controller, as mentioned in the GameCube Classics reveal trailer during the Nintendo April Direct (as noted by VGC), can only be used with the Nintendo GameCube versions of the Classic games.
The peculiar absence of the GameCube controller in modern gaming setups is surprising because it boasts almost all essential inputs for a wide range of contemporary games. Its button layout may seem unconventional relative to other controllers currently in use, but it excels in this regard. It’s important to mention that it offers additional capabilities beyond its original version. For instance, it comes with wireless connectivity and the new C button on the Switch 2 for live chats, enhancing its functionality.
Prior to Nintendo postponing Switch 2 pre-orders, it was announced that gamers would require an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription to purchase the GameCube controller. The GameCube collection can be accessed via the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, which is set to debut alongside Wind Waker, Soulcalibur 2, and F-Zero GX. Additional games such as Super Mario Sunshine, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Pokemon Colosseum, and more will be added later on.
The specific date for reopening Switch 2 pre-orders hasn’t been announced yet, but industry experts predict that Nintendo might need to increase the price of the console as a result of President Donald Trump’s tariffs in the United States.
