As a passionate gamer myself, I’ve been buzzing all week ever since Nintendo unveiled details about their upcoming titles for the Nintendo Switch 2 during their Direct broadcast on Wednesday. The excitement was palpable with all those surprising announcements, but it quickly turned into a bit of a stir when they revealed the prices – particularly Mario Kart World, which is breaking new ground with an $80 price tag. To add to the buzz, Nintendo has now decided to postpone pre-orders in the U.S., as they’re taking time to assess the impact of the latest tariff changes introduced earlier this week.
Nintendo Switch 2 game sizes revealed by Japan eShop
As an avid gamer, I’m thrilled about the upcoming Nintendo console! Unlike the original Switch, which started with a modest 32 GB of internal storage, the new model, dubbed the Switch 2, is set to offer a generous 256 GB. This is a significant upgrade, especially for digital gamers like myself who frequently run out of space when downloading major Nintendo releases. The original microSD cards that were once our saviors on the eShop won’t work with the new hardware, but fret not! Switch 2 users will instead need to invest in microSD express cards. This upgrade is certainly welcome news for us digital-focused gamers!
As a gamer, I’m excited about the potential for more digital storage space on the upcoming Switch 2. However, it seems like the games themselves are going to be quite substantial in size, though not eight times larger than before. Interestingly enough, the game that takes up the most space is Mario Kart World, weighing in at a hefty 23.4 GB. That’s significantly larger than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which is currently at 11.2 GB. Keep in mind, though, that the size of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe could increase with additional DLC courses. It’s also important to note that this new Mario Kart game outweighs the current largest first-party Nintendo Switch game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which comes in at a relatively smaller 16.4 GB. Here’s hoping that the $80 price tag will be justified by this larger gaming experience!
Donkey Kong: Bananza is set to take up around 10 GB of storage space. Although it doesn’t have an exact counterpart like Mario Kart or Super Mario Odyssey, the latest major Nintendo 3D platformer from 2017 (Super Mario Odyssey) was slightly smaller at approximately 5.7 GB. The new GameCube Nintendo Classics collection, accessible only to subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, will require about 3.5 GB of space. This is relatively larger compared to the Nintendo 64 collection which occupies around 1.7 GB.
1. The “Super Mario Party Jamboree” will expand from its current size of 5.3 GB to 7.7 GB due to the addition of the “Jamboree TV” expansion pack.
2. Contrary to expectations, “Kirby and the Forgotten Land” is expected to shrink in size on the Switch 2, despite the inclusion of a story expansion, going from 5.8 GB to 5.7 GB.
In essence, most people find this situation less than ideal. The game “Mario Kart World” is expected to be one of the largest first-party Nintendo games ever made. However, its size hasn’t been compared with other upcoming titles like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond or Pokémon Legends: Z-A yet. Regardless, the matter of its file size isn’t significant, but it becomes problematic when considering the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and “Mario Kart World” bundle only includes a digital copy of the game. This means Nintendo enthusiasts are left with two options: either save on the $80 price tag for “Mario Kart World” and accept its 23.4 GB size or opt to preserve storage space and pay the full $80. Few players are content with this predicament.
