Nintendo Reveals What The Switch 2 Could Have Been Called

Nintendo revealed they brainstormed numerous suggestions for the title of the Switch 2 before ultimately settling on that moniker. In an interview with developers published on their official website, the producer of the Switch 2, Kouichi Kawamoto, admitted that deciding on a fitting name for the console was quite challenging for Nintendo’s team.

“There were a lot of ideas for the name, and we really struggled to find the right one,” he said.

Among the concepts Nintendo pondered upon was the concept of a device called “Super Nintendo Switch.” However, they opted out of this idea because they felt uneasy about continuing with the same naming scheme that was used for the Super NES.

Kawamoto stated, “System Two is a fresh development with enhanced capabilities, yet instead of focusing on its technical aspects, consider it as the latest creation from Nintendo. We’ve given it this name, Nintendo Switch 2, in our hopes that it will establish itself as the new benchmark for the Nintendo Switch family.

In his statement, Takuhiro Dohta, the development director of the Switch 2, explained that rather than targeting individuals who favor “top-tier hardware,” Nintendo intends for the Switch 2 to attract a broad range of customers. He further noted that they chose the name “Nintendo Switch 2” to clearly convey to potential buyers that this is the latest system in the Switch lineup.

Tetsuya Sasaki, another designer from the Switch 2 team, mentioned that the name “Switch 2” is straightforward and clear. He further explained that since this new system was intended as an appropriate follow-up to the original Switch, maintaining the familiar name was logical.
