As a dedicated Smash Bros fan since the days of Nintendo 64, this latest development has me buzzing with excitement! The anticipation for a new entry in the series has been building like an electrified Donkey Kong barrel rolling downhill.

In a surprising move, Nintendo caught Super Smash Bros enthusiasts off guard with the release of a fresh trailer for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, fueling excitement among fans who eagerly await the announcement of the next installment in the franchise.

2018 saw the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a game that concluded its development phase in 2021. The last playable character added to the roster was Sora from Kingdom Hearts.

Afterwards, the series’ creator, Masahiro Sakurai, established his own YouTube channel and seemingly retired – yet subtly suggested that he might rejoin the team for developing the following game on a potential Switch successor.

On October 22nd, Sakurai disclosed in his last YouTube upload that a new game venture of his was under development, hinting strongly that Smash 6 might be on its way.

On November 13th, exactly six years since its initial release, Nintendo unveiled a fresh trailer for the game showcasing Canadian actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and her sibling.

In this part of the video, Maitreyi and her sibling go head-to-head in a round of Super Smash Bros., with Kirby, controlled by Maitreyi, ultimately defeating Luigi played by her sibling. Yet, some viewers found it questionable that Nintendo was promoting the game itself.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed an interesting pattern: it’s about six to seven years since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (SSBU) was released, and typically, the gaps between Smash games are around 7-8 years. Now, I’m not claiming that this means a new game is definitely on the horizon, but I am pointing out some intriguing coincidences that seem to be pointing towards the world of Smash.

One person was wondering why a six-year-old advertisement for a game was still showing up in 2024, but I think it might be hinting at something related to our future,” someone else commented.

Indeed, it’s possible that with Black Friday and Christmas approaching, Nintendo might be attempting to boost sales of the game by offering a discount, all while keeping fans aware that Super Smash Bros. remains a significant cornerstone in their product lineup.

It remains undecided whether Nintendo will develop a brand-new Smash game or simply release an enhanced version of Ultimate featuring additional characters and levels.

It’s important to mention that in October, there was renewed talk as Ultimate received an update which addressed some bugs and also sparked rumors. Additionally, it was reported that GameCube controllers, a common feature in the Smash series, might be coming back into production.

Let’s be patient and find out what Sakurai’s upcoming project will be. If it does involve Smash, it might align perfectly with the anticipated unveiling of the Switch 2.
