Nintendo patents features that Palworld had for a long time. A strange twist in a high-profile court battle

The Pokemon Company hasn’t finished addressing the issue of copyright violations by the creators of Palworld, yet.

Due to recent adjustments by Pocketpair studio and the Pokemon owner’s objections, there’s been a noticeable lack of discussion regarding the ongoing court case. The players weren’t particularly happy about these compromises, but the most recent intel from Gamesfray (as reported by Windows Central) hints that Nintendo and their team are uncertain about the outcome of the legal dispute.

Patent updated

According to experts who have thoroughly examined the relevant documents, Gamesfray’s editorial team has identified some unusual decisions by the company. These actions aren’t limited to those connected with the TPC lawsuit. In Japan, three patents are currently involved in a legal dispute: two pertain to capturing Pals, while one revolves around modifying the “mount.” Despite not filing a lawsuit in the US, Nintendo has secured patents that led to adjustments in Palworld by Pocketpair.

It appears that certain solutions similar to those in the game Palworld were demonstrated roughly six months prior to Nintendo’s patent application (or even before the submission of related applications). According to Gamesfray, the publisher of Pokemon is alleged to have requested an update to their patent with the Japan Patent Office.

Florian Mueller, founder of Gamesfray, has noted an atypical clause within the revised patent application that isn’t common in legal documents like this. He sees it as a “last-ditch effort” by Nintendo, suggesting they may be unsure about their chances in the ongoing court case.

It’s important to note that this interpretation comes from Mueller, but many who have examined the latest patent application believe it is overly complex. However, at this stage, we should avoid jumping to conclusions about the final decision in this case. All we know for sure is that Pocketpair is still making concessions in Palworld (and there’s a significant crossover with Terraria).
