Nintendo May Have Given Away A Clue About How Some Switch 2 Games Will Work

The latest Nintendo Direct event unveiled Virtual Game Cards, a new feature allowing you to share digital games across various Nintendo Switch consoles within one household or under a single family account. Notably, the official website provides an intriguing footnote that hints at how Nintendo might clarify “upgraded” Switch 1 games in future developments.

Tucked beneath the asterisks at the page’s base, the website casually mentions an as-yet undisclosed game category called “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.” More precisely, the text says, “Exclusive games for Nintendo Switch 2 and games specifically for Nintendo Switch 2 Edition [emphasis added] are only playable on a Nintendo Switch 2 console.

The capitalization of “Edition” in this context catches the eye – Nintendo has hinted that the Switch 2 will support some Switch 1 games retroactively, but hasn’t provided many details about how this compatibility will be implemented. The way this term is used on the official Nintendo website suggests it may serve as an official label to differentiate between exclusive Switch 2 games and upgraded versions of other games for the new console. If “Switch 2 Edition” games do come into existence, they could potentially offer enhanced features, but it’s still unclear whether such games will be offered or if there will be associated upgrade costs.

There’s been chatter about several games initially released on the current Nintendo Switch potentially getting an upgrade on its upcoming model. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Xenoblade Chronicles X are some titles that have been suggested as possibilities. Interestingly, it was discovered that the recent remaster of Xenoblade Chronicles X has a hidden 60 frames-per-second mode within its code.

During the latest Nintendo Direct broadcast, Virtual Playing Cards were among the various announcements made. This event also saw the debut introductions of new games within the Rhythm Heaven and Tomodachi Life series. Furthermore, updates on projects such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, a remake of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 in HD-2D format, and Pokemon Legends Z-A were provided.

At present, Nintendo hasn’t explicitly discussed “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” games, but there’s a possibility they might during their scheduled live stream event, the “Nintendo Switch 2 Direct,” which is set to begin on April 2 at 6 AM Pacific Time / 9 AM Eastern Time.
