It turns out that a recent upgrade for the Nintendo Switch system contains an adjustment that wasn’t initially noticed by many. This update appears to have subtly tweaked how the eShop rankings are calculated, with indications that it intends to downplay what is commonly referred to as “shovelware.”
(Shovelware refers to cheap, low-quality video games sold in large quantities.)
According to VGC, the recent update alters the eShop rankings to list games according to their earnings from sales within the last 72 hours, whereas before, the ranking was determined by the overall sales volume during the previous 48 hours.
On platforms like eShop, Xbox Marketplace, PlayStation Store, and PC digital stores, you’ll find a multitude of games categorized as “shovelware” – these are often deceiving, of poor quality, and priced affordably. A common belief is that the creators of such games sell them at low costs to boost their visibility in the rankings. However, under the revised eShop ranking system, this strategy might not yield the same results.
As an enthusiast, I’ve noticed that critics like VGC and others have raised concerns about the potential negative effects this new system could have on high-quality, affordable games. However, only time will tell us the actual outcome. Regarding the eShop on the Switch 2, launching in June, we’re all eagerly waiting to find out more about its functionality.
This week, an update for the Switch (version 20.0.0) was released, incorporating the long-awaited Virtual Game Cards feature that was first mentioned during the March 2025 Nintendo Direct presentation. In addition to this, it now supports GameShare and is compatible with the upcoming Switch 2 system.
Once the update is applied, any previously bought digital titles and DLC will be transformed into Virtual Game Cards. These cards work like physical game cards, allowing you to transfer and share your digital games between two Switch systems. This makes organizing your digital library more convenient. Additionally, you can lend out digital games temporarily to other users within your family group.
