Nintendo has asked a California court to issue a subpoena that, if granted, would compel Discord to reveal the identity of the person known as “Teraleak,” who is believed to be behind a significant leak that occurred in October 2024. This leak reportedly contained sensitive information about Game Freak and The Pokemon Company’s future projects, such as Pokemon Legends: Z-A, along with personal details of Game Freak employees. Additionally, it was said to include data from previous Pokemon games, including artwork and discarded designs.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share an interesting factoid: When it comes to ownership of the iconic Pokémon franchise, Nintendo holds about one third, while Game Freak and The Pokémon Company jointly hold the remaining two thirds.
In the court documents obtained by Polygon, it is revealed that Nintendo asked for the personal details such as name, address, phone number, and email of an individual who leaked confidential information. The leaker, identified as GameFreakOUT on Discord, had access to over 1 terabyte of data from Game Freak’s internal servers. A picture in the court filing shows this person sharing a file containing the leaked data and encouraging Discord group members to “Enjoy.
Nintendo sent DMCA takedown requests to remove the pirated data, but despite this, the information still circulates on the internet. Although Nintendo hasn’t explicitly mentioned plans to sue the Pokemon leak source, they have a pattern of pursuing legal action against individuals whose actions they view as a potential business risk.
Gary Bowser, as an instance, was detained due to federal charges related to fraud, stemming from his involvement in designing and marketing tools that enabled unauthorized access to video game consoles like the Nintendo Switch. This allowed users to play games on their devices without making legitimate purchases. After serving time, Bowser is now required to pay Nintendo $10 million in restitution and has 25% of his monthly earnings deducted to settle the debt.
