Nintendo Is Suing Palworld Devs

As a long-time Nintendo enthusiast who’s witnessed the evolution of gaming from pixelated beginnings to the vibrant world we see today, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions seeing this legal battle unfold. On one hand, I applaud Nintendo for protecting its intellectual property and the hard work that has gone into building their unique universe.

Nintendo has taken legal action against the Palworld developers, Pocketpair, on charges of violating their patent laws.

As stated in a recent announcement, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have taken legal action today, September 18, at the Tokyo District Court. The purpose of this lawsuit is to request an injunction to stop infringement and claim damages due to the game Palworld, developed and launched by the defendant, allegedly violating several patent rights.

Nintendo will persistently act to defend its intellectual property, such as the Nintendo brand, from unauthorized use. This is done to safeguard the valuable intellectual properties they’ve built up over time.

Back in January, I remember Nintendo mentioning they were looking into Palworld, hinting at potential copyright issues with their beloved franchise, Pokémon. They promised to take necessary steps if any IP rights violations were found. Yet here we are in June, and Pocketpair is still waiting for any word from Nintendo, let alone facing any legal action.

With Nintendo’s recent lawsuit against Pocketpair, the dynamics of the game Palworld have undergone a significant shift. To date, an impressive 12 million copies have been sold on Steam. Pocketpair intends to persist with Palworld, exploring possibilities such as teaming up with Sony Music Entertainment to broaden their Palworld business and potentially incorporating microtransactions in the future.
