Today, during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation, the mystery behind the “C” button on the right-hand Joy-Con was finally unveiled. This button, initially leaked months before the Switch 2’s official debut, has been the subject of various speculations. However, it is now clear that this button will be utilized for the new online feature on the Nintendo Switch 2, known as Game Chat.
The truth behind the mysterious Nintendo Switch 2 “C” button revealed
Nintendo has earned a reputation for lagging behind in online features, as evidenced by the limitation of only one player per console when playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online. Given that the original Nintendo Switch is turning eight this year, it’s understandable that the new console represents an opportunity for them to make some progress, even if it’s just a small step forward. In today’s presentation, Nintendo shared some intriguing plans regarding their online services.
As a gaming enthusiast, I recently had an exclusive sneak peek into Game Chat, a revolutionary new feature that bridges the gap between gamers worldwide. What sets it apart is that you don’t have to be playing the same game! Yes, you read that right. This feature allows for voice and video calls with other players during gameplay.
However, I must admit, the streaming experience was a bit choppy, even during the Direct presentation. But despite some technical hiccups, this new addition is a significant leap forward in online gaming with Nintendo consoles.
With the “C” button on your right-hand Joy-Con, you can effortlessly share your gameplay, mute yourself, and even focus on a friend’s gameplay for a more immersive experience.
During a conversation, up to three friends will pop up at the bottom of your screen, similar to a Discord voice chat session. You can adjust the size of these friend’s windows, making them large, small, or hiding them entirely. Moreover, if you have a Nintendo Switch 2 console, you can use a dedicated camera that connects via USB-C ports, whether you’re playing handheld or docked. This feature allows players to join the video call while their gameplay appears as if they’re using a green screen background.
The enhancement to Nintendo’s online services, known as Game Chat, is a significant leap. As an added benefit, Nintendo is offering a prolonged complimentary access period where anyone can utilize Game Chat without needing a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, all the way until March 31st, 2026. For the majority of the Switch 2’s initial year on sale, this new feature will be accessible to everyone, making for an excellent start for the new console.
As a dedicated fan, it seems Nintendo has come up with an ingenious method to replicate that classic local couch co-op experience in an online setting – quite remarkable! Admittedly, my enthusiasm is based on a quick explanatory video; we’ll have to wait and see how seamlessly this feature integrates when the Nintendo Switch 2 finally hits shelves on June 5th.
However, if the Direct live stream preview is anything to go by, the gameplay streaming might not be as smooth as butter.
