Nintendo defends Switch 2 price following concerns it’s too expensive for young players

Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, spoke on the matter of potential high costs associated with the Switch 2, outlining the reasoning behind their decision to set a higher price compared to previous consoles.

During a question-and-answer session with shareholders on June 27, Furukawa admitted that the Switch 2 comes at a higher price point compared to past Nintendo consoles. However, he stressed that their goal is to create a product that offers exceptional value for the investment made by consumers.

A key discussion point during the meeting revolved around potential challenges in keeping younger participants involved, should the Switch 2 prove too expensive for them.

A shareholder pointed out that the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 may cost more than previous systems such as the Family Computer system (Famicom). They expressed worry that this higher price could limit young children’s access to it. What measures are being considered to tackle this problem?

As an enthusiastic admirer, I can share that Furukawa mentioned they’re keeping a keen eye on whether the cost could potentially hinder younger crowds, yet they stand firm that the price mirrors the exceptional quality of the console.

He stated that they consider the cost of the Nintendo Switch 2 to be fitting, given the quality of gaming it delivers. He also acknowledged that the Nintendo Switch 2 carries a greater price tag compared to their previous gaming devices.

We’re developing experiences beyond our gaming platforms, allowing young kids to interact with Nintendo characters and game environments. Our long-term ambition is to have them transition to playing on our gaming systems in the future.

Furukawa stated that we’re carefully examining how much the cost of the system could potentially be an obstacle.

Discussion about the cost of The Switch 2 has been a popular point ever since it was unveiled, yet the Q&A session failed to address the impact of tariffs on the rising prices in certain areas.

The Switch 2, launched on June 5th, has seen an extraordinarily successful debut, far surpassing the initial sales of its previous model by a vast margin.
