As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that this latest announcement from Nintendo has me buzzing with excitement! The confirmation of backward compatibility for the Switch 2 console is music to my ears, especially since it means I’ll be able to revisit my favorite games on the new device.
Following the unveiling of the next-gen Nintendo console, there’s been a lot of buzz online about potential features like its design, name, and other details. Even though we’ve been eagerly awaiting official updates from Nintendo about their new console, one of the biggest revelations came through on their official social media accounts.
On November 5th, 2024, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa shared exciting updates about the Switch’s successor on social media, revealing some crucial details regarding its features. However, a release date for the new console, tentatively named the Switch 2, has not been disclosed yet. These recent insights stem from a meeting with top Nintendo executives, where the Switch 2 was among the main subjects discussed. A potential launch window was hinted at in the most recent earnings call report.
In a recent corporate announcement, it was disclosed through their official Twitter account (Furukawa) that software for the Nintendo Switch can also be played on the upcoming console’s successor.
I am from the Nintendo team. Today, we announced that the successor model for the Nintendo Switch will be compatible with Nintendo Switch software. Additionally, Nintendo Switch Online will continue to be available on the successor model. We will provide more detailed information about this successor model, which includes compatibility with the Nintendo Switch, at a later date.

As an ardent fan, I’m excited to share that Nintendo Switch Online will carry over to the next generation of Nintendo Switch systems. More details about this upcoming console, including its compatibility with the current Nintendo Switch, will be revealed in due time. Stay tuned!
The announcement that the upcoming Switch 2 console will support older games is significant, especially since a subscription for Switch Online service is also expected to be available. Although details about other aspects of the Switch 2 console are yet to be disclosed; they have shared information regarding its hardware and software sales during their recent Earnings Call on that specific date.
In their most recent financial report, Nintendo has adjusted its projected Switch sales down by one million units (from 13.5 million to 12.5 million) and expects a decrease in operating profits (from ¥400 billion to ¥360 billion). This drop in hardware sales can be attributed to the current year being less bustling than last year, which was marked by the releases of the Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, both of which boosted Switch sales.
They’ve made it clear they plan to unveil the Switch 2 console by the end of their financial year, which is March 31st, 2025. So, expect updates on the Switch 2 and its features in the coming months, as Nintendo will be marketing the current Switch model and offering fresh gaming experiences until the Switch 2 makes its debut, likely around this timeframe.
