One intriguing aspect of the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct unveiling was the Upgrade Packs, which are one-time-purchase codes allowing owners of select Nintendo Switch games to upgrade to their corresponding Switch 2 Edition versions. The primary uncertainty concerning these Upgrade Packs centered around their pricing, and during an interview, Bill Trinen, Vice President of Product and Player Experience at Nintendo of America, revealed that the codes will retail for $10 each (for the two Zelda games as a starting point).
In an interview with IGN, when asked about the Upgrade Packs, Trinen clarified that individuals who have already bought The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom can pay a one-time fee of $10 to acquire an Upgrade Pack. Trinen explained that the suggested retail price of $80, which was mentioned after the event, is only applicable for those who haven’t previously purchased the game before.
If you own either Tears of the Kingdom or Breath of the Wild, the upgrades cost $9.99 each, Trinen mentioned. But if you’re already a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscriber, you won’t have to pay extra because the Zelda upgrade packs are included in your membership.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled about the enhanced editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom coming for the Nintendo Switch 2. These new versions will offer smoother gameplay with improved frame rates, snappier load times, and HDR support to truly leverage the power of the upgraded Switch 2 hardware. Furthermore, the upgrade grants us access to Zelda Notes, an in-app resource that can be accessed via the Nintendo Switch smartphone app. This feature allows us to listen to Voice Memories spoken by characters throughout both games, and even share Ultrahand blueprints with fellow players using QR codes!
At the moment, we don’t have definite pricing details for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition versions of games like Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Super Mario Party Jamboree, as revealed in the Switch 2 Direct. However, it’s been speculated that other games might come with some additional benefits on the Nintendo Switch 2 without any extra cost.
The anticipated launch date for the Nintendo Switch 2 is June 6. However, pre-orders that were initially planned to start on April 9 have been delayed indefinitely as Nintendo evaluates the possible effects of tariffs and changing market trends.
