As a long-time Nintendo enthusiast who has spent countless hours exploring the magical worlds they’ve created, this news about the impending closure of eShop and Nintendo Switch Online services in China has left me feeling rather nostalgic and a tad worried. I’ve cherished every moment playing Super Mario Bros., Zelda, and Pokémon games on my beloved Nintendo consoles, and I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness as the thought of losing access to these digital realms crosses my mind.
The eShop and Nintendo Switch Online services are set to shut down by early 2026. This decision follows the Chinese government’s enforcement of a rule that limits children to just an hour of online gaming daily.
Yet, Nintendo hasn’t provided a particular explanation for the planned closure of the eShop and all network services on the Switch in China, as reported by Eurogamer.
Regardless of the situation, the eShop operated by Nintendo will cease its operations in China on April 1, 2026. This implies that Nintendo will no longer be selling games or providing demo versions. From May 15, 2026, Nintendo will restrict the redemption of online codes, thereby preventing users from activating DLC or other digital items they possess codes for. The same date, May 15, also marks the closure of all network services for the Switch in China, as well as the discontinuation of any related online code redemptions.
Individuals utilizing WeChat in China have the opportunity to obtain up to four complimentary Nintendo video games, which are being offered due to an upcoming shutdown. The following games are among those available:
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Super Mario Party
- Mario Tennis Aces
- Yoshi’s Crafted World
- Flexible Brain School
- Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Exercises
- Kirby Star Allies
- New Pokemon Snap
- Pokemon Go! Pikachu
- Pokemon Let’s Go! Eevee
It’s worth noting that Nintendo has yet to provide an explanation for the significant shift in one of the globe’s major gaming markets. Additionally, it remains a mystery how this development may impact the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, or what we might call its successor.
