“Ninjas can’t take a lot of damage”: Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Justification for Sekiro’s Resurrection Mechanic Perfectly Fits Elden Ring: Nightreign’s Low Vitality Classes

Hidetaka Miyazaki and his challenging creations are famous for being particularly harsh, yet Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice goes beyond any other Souls game in this series by offering virtually no room for player mistakes.

According to the director, battles in Sekiro are precarious, and a minor mistake can lead to failure. However, fortunately, Hidetaka Miyazaki has incorporated a resurrection feature in the game, which could potentially benefit players with low vitality during Elden Ring Nightreign.

Hidetaka Miyazaki and his ruthless Sekiro Resurrection Mechanic

In the game Sekiro, players assume the role of a nimble ninja named Wolf, who boasts quick reactions but regrettably lacks the robustness typical of characters in previous Hidetaka Miyazaki games like Dark Souls. Quite ironically, this is a departure from what gamers have come to expect in those titles, where their character gradually transforms into an almost unstoppable force as gameplay progresses.

Discussing the reason behind the death mechanic in Sekiro, its acclaimed creator recently shared some insights in a conversation with PlayStation Blog, stating the following:

In a discussion with PlayStation Blog, the well-known director shed light on the rationale behind the death system featured in Sekiro, as follows:

As a gamer, I prefer the stealthy agility of a ninja in combat compared to a knight. Ninjas can’t absorb much damage; they’re constantly teetering on the brink, their vulnerability heightening with each strike. It’s a high-stakes dance, where one misstep could spell doom. Knights, on the other hand, seem to have more give and take, with armor shielding them from immediate danger. The concept of such perilous, edge-of-your-seat combat is what sparked the idea of resurrection in my gaming world.

Looking back, the fight system in the 2019 game was truly impressive. Yet, one mistake could lead to an instant game over, leaving you staring at a death screen. It’s in these moments that the resurrect mechanism proves particularly useful, and it seems ideally suited for a specific character class in the upcoming Elden Ring Nightreign.

Elden Ring Nightreign Low Vitality Classes can possibly take a mechanic from Sekiro

In that interview, Hidetaka Miyazaki acknowledged that bringing back the protagonist from Sekiro not only maintains a swift pace within the game but also makes it more captivating for players. Furthermore, this aspect of Sekiro could be utilized with greater intent in Elden Ring Nightreign than merely to quicken the tempo.

Excitedly, I can’t wait for the release of “Nightreign”! As the director has shared, we’ll have eight unique character classes to pick from in this game. Among these, there will be some that prioritize stats other than vitality, which means the resurrection mechanic could play a significant role in our gaming strategy.

Fans of FromSoftware would undoubtedly be thrilled if their upcoming game incorporates and effectively implements one mechanic from Sekiro that they find appealing. This shouldn’t prove too challenging for the studio, given their recent practice of reintroducing bosses from past series like The Nameless King.
