Once more, may fortune always smile upon you as it did in the world of “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, for their newest novel, “Sunrise at the Reaping,” has just been released!
The novel prequel traces the journey of a younger Haymitch Abernathy, who was portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the movies, as he becomes the winner of the 50th annual Hunger Games. Simultaneously with the book’s release, Lionsgate announced plans for a movie adaptation.
Showing no signs of slowing, this powerful dystopian series boasts five books, six films, and a forthcoming stage production scheduled for London in October. The enduring appeal of Panem was evident at a midnight book release event at the Union Square Barnes & Noble in New York City on Monday, one of many similar events taking place nationwide for Scholastic’s launch.
Collins herself was absent, since the author deliberately avoids media events and fan interactions, preferring her work to stand alone. However, David Levithan, Collins’ longtime publisher and editor, along with Ellie Berger from Scholastic Trade Publishing and Rachel Coun, the head of “Hunger Games” marketing, were present at the sold-out event. Activities leading up to the midnight distribution of the books included a “Hunger Games” trivia quiz, friendship bracelet crafting, photo opportunities, and a game called “What’s in Your Parachute?”, where participants had to decide what they would want sent to them as a ‘sponsor’ if they were competing in the Hunger Games.
Though Collins’ involvement would undoubtedly be delightful, it’s understood why the author opts for less participation instead. This is because Coun, who has collaborated with Collins and their team since the first “Hunger Games” book was released in 2008, sheds light on the author’s preference to keep a more distant role in such engagements.
In their conversation, Coun explained to EbMaster that the focus is on the book itself. He elaborated on the anticipation and reaction it provokes. A masterfully crafted book will elicit a response from readers and stand the test of time. This is why we have devoted fans who were eight when the first book was released and are now adults, gathering to celebrate ‘Sunrise.’ It’s a tribute to her exceptional writing ability.
With the arrival of sunrise, there are numerous reasons to rejoice, but Scholastic’s CEO Berger is particularly content simply because they’ve crossed the finish line without significant issues – quite an impressive accomplishment in today’s times.
Despite being quite nerve-wracking, I must admit that considering the numerous books we’ve published over time, there haven’t been any significant leaks thus far. This surprises me because managing secrets in today’s digital age is much more challenging compared to when we could rely on guards and cameras in a warehouse. Now, with social media and the ease of posting information online, it’s become harder and the risks are greater.
Since the book’s mysteries have been revealed, everyone is eagerly anticipating the upcoming film version, set to hit theaters in November 2026. Nina Jacobson, known for producing the “Hunger Games” series and currently working on the “Sunrise on the Reaping” movie, expresses her excitement to step out of her isolated space and join the enthusiastic fan community instead.
Just before the book’s launch, Jacobson discussed with EbMaster the ongoing success, lasting impact, and of course, what fans might anticipate from the forthcoming movie regarding the franchise.
Has it really been thirteen years since the initial “Hunger Games” movie hit the screens, and yet the series continues to captivate audiences? Were you expecting to find yourself immersed in the realm of Panem for more than a decade?
It’s hard to fathom that something could captivate people as deeply as these books, stir their emotions as profoundly as these books do, or develop such a devoted fan base – notions that might seem delusional if you tried to conceive them beforehand. You can wish for people to cherish the work you’re creating as much as you do, but to envision it enduring for years and garnering this level of devotion is an aspiration that feels unreachable because it seems almost impossible.
What new insights into the “Hunger Games” world did you gain by revisiting it in the 2023 prequel, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”? What was different about exploring its origins in this story?
What stood out to me about Suzanne’s work, and why I hold her in such high regard as an author, is that if someone had asked fans of her books or films, “What’s the next story you’d like to see?” I doubt anyone would have requested, “I want the backstory of the villain.” We want to follow the characters we root for, not the one we’ve spent so many movies hating. And now we’re planning to make him our main character?
Switching perspectives to that of the Capitol and delving into the human side of Snow, as well as his transformation into a character, revealed an abundance of insights about the roots of the Games and the progression of a villain. The underlying sadness beneath his cruelty took me by surprise.
It’s truly enlightening to comprehend why she narrated her story sequentially, as well as the links we can now identify among the details. This is made possible by our revisiting certain parts and then moving forward again. The connections are becoming clear, revealing a wealth of background information that was previously obscure. Now, it all makes sense due to the order in which she chose to share her story.
I’m absolutely bursting with anticipation for everyone to delve into this book I’ve been guarding as a private treasure. It’s such a joy to witness how all the elements align in this story, and the profound ideas and topics she intends to address are always strikingly relevant.
Regarding the recently announced book, “Sunrise on the Reaping,” an interesting development is taking place: both the 2025 book and the 2026 movie adaptation were simultaneously unveiled. Can you share your experience working on the film while the book is being released?
This is quite an unprecedented task for us. I’ve never before tackled an adaptation similar to this one, where we’re well ahead of the book’s timeline, yet there’s anticipation from the audience. I was aware that she was writing another book, but I had no inkling – it might have been years! I certainly didn’t foresee receiving a call so soon after “Ballad” saying, “I have another book. I want you to read it. I want to know if you think it could be a movie or not,” to me and Francis Lawrence.
We undertook a clandestine operation involving me visiting my co-producer’s house to read an exclusive manuscript of the book. This particular copy was always stored at his residence. In turn, Francis and I were given the opportunity to peruse it. Our excitement knew no bounds! Reading this book, which held me captive with its narrative, left me emotionally drained as a passionate reader. I found myself on the verge of tears throughout my reading experience. The book moved and invigorated me in ways that words can hardly express. Afterward, I could only communicate with Francis, Suzanne, and our studio associates since I was so deeply affected by it. Many of them hadn’t even read the book yet due to its restricted circulation for safekeeping! Now that we get to share this experience and listen to others’ perspectives, I am beyond thrilled for the fans. As a fan myself who gets to create these films, I feel incredibly fortunate.
What can you tell me about where you are in the film’s development process so far?
We’ve made significant progress, thanks to the initial leap we took, and immediately got down to business. Although it hasn’t been officially revealed yet, we have a solid draft in the works. Our locations have been determined, and remarkably, for a book set to be released tomorrow, we are quite advanced in its creation.
Instead of guessing what fans might prefer, you empathize with them by imagining yourself among them. I’m eagerly anticipating their feedback and to discover what resonates with them. Our fanbase is remarkably astute and insightful; they’ve already begun speculating about numerous aspects of the book. I can hardly wait for them to compare their theories with the actual content. The whole experience has been exhilarating and incredibly gratifying. It’s like you’re organizing a grand surprise party, eagerly waiting to unveil the surprises.
In the movies, Haymitch has become a beloved character, mainly because of Woody Harrelson’s outstanding portrayal. So, when we are choosing an actor to play a younger version of Haymitch in this upcoming film, what specific traits are we searching for?
This early, unpublished script has kept us guessing for quite some time, as we’ve been hesitant to let actors read it due to the risk of leaks. What we’re really seeking for this role isn’t an actor who merely imitates Woody, but rather someone who convincingly embodies a youthful version of the character – one who seems plausible before the hardships and emotional turmoil wrought by the Games set in.
No one else can embody Woody Harrelson quite like Woody Harrelson himself. However, it’s essential to discover the mischievousness within you that mirrors his unique charm, and delve into understanding: if we could go back in time to the character he played at the start of “The Hunger Games,” what kind of person he was before fame, and why he evolved into that persona.

This role is exceptional in many ways, one being that it seldom happens for a franchise to provide an actor with an opportunity to truly display their talent and versatility, but this series does exactly that.
Our characters have been skillfully portrayed by exceptionally talented actors. They’re drawn to these roles because they offer complex characters and thought-provoking themes. This franchise continues to be grounded in profound character development, stemming from intense emotional turmoil.
What is it about “The Hunger Games” that has kept fans invested for so many years?
I deeply appreciate Suzanne, as her writing is rooted in themes and characters that resonate profoundly with us all. Her explorations of these themes often mirror our own experiences, even when portrayed through characters inhabiting an alternate, dystopian reality. These characters are remarkably grounded and relatable due to their struggles, making them recognizable to many readers.
Starting from the point where Katniss Everdeen declares, “I volunteer as tribute,” there’s a unique knack to identify with these characters on a level that is both inspiring and heart-wrenching. Fans admire the richness of her insight into history, philosophy, and the profound concepts hidden beneath many aspects of our current cultural and global landscape. I believe she possesses an extraordinary talent for unearthing deep-seated character traumas, revealing issues that resonate with us all.
Our books have always been intellectually stimulating rather than being marketed as a Young Adult series. Instead, we’ve approached them as entertainment suitable for all ages, featuring a young adult protagonist. We’ve never compromised the depth or complexity of the story. We’ve never watered down the material to make it simpler, and we’ve always remained true to the original books. They offer more than just entertainment; they spark conversation and debate. After watching an adaptation, you can discuss both the popcorn-worthy action scenes and the deeper, thought-provoking themes. I believe Suzanne Collins’ knack for delivering content that appeals to a discerning audience, offering both excitement and substance, has contributed significantly to the enduring popularity of these books.
