Nightreign’s Combat Revolution Exposes the Biggest Flaw Elder Scrolls 6 Still Hasn’t Fixed

It’s clear that the spin-off game from FromSoftware, titled Elden Ring Nightreign, may not resonate with fans who preferred the original RPG. This is because unlike Elden Ring which was primarily a single-player experience, Nightreign emphasizes cooperative Play versus Environmental (PvE) aspects.

Despite a relatively cool response to the game’s title thus far, FromSoftware remains undeterred. They are, in fact, revamping the original game’s mechanics to align with its Roguelike gameplay style.

In the game Nightreign, there’s been significant focus on one key feature: combat. FromSoftware aims to take this element to unprecedented levels, and it’s crucial for The Elder Scrolls 6 to do the same in its development.

FromSoftware has raised the bar once again in Elden Ring Nightreign

During a chat with Sachie Kobari from PlayStation Blog, Elden Ring Nightreign’s director, Junya Ishizaki, shared details about the cooperative multiplayer feature. He delved into FromSoftware’s creative design approach and discussed their strategy to enhance gameplay through cooperative play.

Previously, Ishizaki has been involved with creating levels and combat designs for several games developed by FromSoftware. When inquired about his current focus in “Nightreign“, this is what the game director responded:

“For Nightreign, I am currently concentrating on a particular aspect.

Among all the elements, what we emphasized the most in this game is its combative nature. Essentially, the objective is to vanquish the Nightlord by the end of every night.

As Ishizaki explains, the main focus of developing Nightreign by FromSoftware was centered around combat. The game’s environment and characters were designed with the ultimate aim of vanquishing the Nightlord every night in mind. The development team encourages players to approach their targets tactfully and strategically when engaging them.

frankly, it’s clear that the battle systems in the Elder Scrolls series are rather dated compared to contemporary games. It might be beneficial for Bethesda and Todd Howard to learn from Nightreign’s method by incorporating elements of strategy and timing into combat for Elder Scrolls 6.

In Elder Scrolls 6, it’s possible that adversaries could learn from player actions and alter the battle mechanics on the fly. However, this should be accomplished in a way that preserves the essence of the series, similar to how Nightreign is adapting within the Elden Ring universe without compromising its fundamental identity.

Elden Ring Nightreign has a major problem

Based on the trailers for Elden Ring Nightreign that we’ve watched thus far, the cooperative gameplay appears quite intriguing. FromSoftware seems to emphasize a wide variety of playable characters, each characterized by distinct appearances and skills.

Beyond that, following the trademark style of FromSoftware, you can expect challenging encounters with formidable bosses. Yet, unlike the rigorous battles found in Elden Ring, some modifications have been implemented to ensure a more balanced experience when playing cooperatively.

While Nightreign may not appeal to all gaming enthusiasts, a dedicated group is eagerly anticipating its release. Yet, it appears that a significant concern regarding the cooperative mode has slipped many people’s minds – the absence of crossplay.

Although “Nightreign” is scheduled for release on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox Series S/X, PS5, and PC, unfortunately, it won’t allow crossplay functionality. This is quite frustrating for many gamers because it means that players will be confined to their specific platforms instead of playing together across different systems.

As a gamer, I must admit I was taken aback when I discovered that FromSoftware’s vision for an unparalleled cooperative gaming experience comes with a catch: it only works if you and your friend are playing on the same system. It’s a bit of a bummer, but hey, maybe they’re working on cross-platform play for the future.

Elden Ring: Nightreign is all set to release on 30 May 2025.
