Nielsen Streaming Top 10: ‘The Perfect Couple’ Repeats No. 1 While ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ Comes On Strong and ‘Kaos’ Falls

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating world of streaming entertainment, I must say that this week’s Nielsen rankings have been nothing short of intriguing. The unstoppable rise of “The Perfect Couple” on Netflix is a testament to the power of compelling storytelling and relatable characters that resonate with audiences across demographics.

For two weeks running, Netflix’s series “The Perfect Couple” has held the top spot on Nielsen’s streaming ranker. This was during the week of September 9 to September 15, 2024, marking the first full week that the show was available for viewing. The series came incredibly close to reaching the 2 billion minute viewing milestone, with a total of 1.97 billion minutes watched, representing approximately 50 million more viewing minutes compared to the previous week. Interestingly, Nielsen data shows that “The Perfect Couple” saw a significant increase in its audience within the younger age demographics, specifically those aged between 18 and 34, as well as 35 to 49.

For two weeks in a row, Netflix secured the runner-up position overall, with their original film “Rebel Ridge” leading the way, boasting an impressive 1.28 billion minutes watched. This week also saw “Rebel Ridge” climbing to the top of the list, making it the number one movie and completing the list of titles that surpassed a billion minutes viewed during this period.

Viewership for the billion club took a dip during the second week of September, as streamers saw slightly lower numbers compared to the previous week. This could be due to summer ending and other activities gaining more attention. One of the shows affected by this drop was Amazon Prime Video’s “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which added a fifth episode this season but only managed 747 million viewing minutes. Despite this, it still ranks as the second most-watched original series, following “The Perfect Couple,” and is the fifth most-watched show overall.

The significant drop in viewership for Netflix’s canceled series “Kaos” might have contributed to its cancellation. Last week, it was ranked No. 9 among streaming originals, but this week it vanished entirely from the overall chart. Viewers watched a total of 393 million minutes, a stark decrease from the 825 million minutes viewed the previous week. This substantial decline could be the reason behind its termination.

Among the rapidly emerging newcomers, Hulu’s series “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” saw a significant increase of over 78%, totalling 729 million minutes watched. This places it at the 6th spot in the overall ranking and the 3rd spot for original content.

In the unveiling of the second part of “Emily in Paris” Season 4, the series garnered a total watch time of 708 million minutes, placing it fourth among original shows and seventh overall.

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that my beloved “Bluey” ranked number one among acquired titles on Disney+, with an impressive 870 million minutes watched! On the other hand, it seems like viewers are finally wrapping up their binge of “Prison Break,” as it’s now at position 10 in the overall list (still holding strong at number 5 in acquired). With a total of 606 million viewing minutes, it’s clear that this 90-episode series has left a lasting impact. Interestingly, Disney-owned properties have a significant presence on the top five acquired titles list, including “Family Guy,” “Bob’s Burgers,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and yes, you guessed it, “Prison Break.

First, let’s take a look at the overall streaming rankings from Nielsen for the period September 9th to September 15th. After that, we’ll examine their list in order of original streaming titles, titles that were acquired, and finally, movies.
