At SXSW, the festival is renowned as the most inviting destination along the circuit, where audiences are enthusiastic and ready to leap up and cheer loudly, even hoarsely, for every outrageous joke or gruesome scene. In truth, a promotional video played before each screening on Sunday to highlight the previous day’s offerings featured filmmakers such as Dave Franco and Paul Feig expressing their appreciation for the Austin crowd’s vibrant energy.
Although some guests at the debut screening of “Holland,” starring Nicole Kidman, Matthew Macfadyen, and Gael Garcia Bernal, appeared unusually tense, there were still applause when her name was announced during the introduction and onstage appearance, although it wasn’t as loud as normal due to sections of unoccupied seats. During the film’s dreamlike sequences and gruesome plot twists, some spectators could be heard whispering and even departing from the theater. And as the credits finished rolling, more people chose not to attend the post-screening discussion compared to Friday and Saturday screenings, which had more excitement for their Q&As.
In Holland, Nancy Kidman, suspecting her husband (Macfadyen) of infidelity, recruits her colleague (Bernal) for assistance in probing her doubts. As she delves deeper into the puzzle, the fragility of her family structure becomes apparent in haunting, frightening dreams.
Or:
In Holland, Nancy Kidman starts to suspect her husband (Macfadyen) of being unfaithful and enlists the help of her coworker (Bernal). As she investigates further, the instability of her family unit becomes evident in disturbing, terrifying nightmares.
Mimi Cave explained that the eerie scenes depicting Nancy’s dreams were inspired by a desire to make viewers feel as if they were inside her personal space, experiencing her fear and anxiety. Additionally, she aimed to safeguard Nancy’s family and son. As a director, Mimi often finds herself drawn to stories through visuals, and the on-screen images are typically toned down from their initial, more extreme concepts.
In Holland, everyone has their secrets, but among them all, Fred, portrayed by Macfadyen’s character, stands out as the most enigmatic. When discussing his approach to the plot twists during filmmaking, he stated: “You play each scene as it unfolds.” Essentially, Fred appears quite ordinary and endearing until things take a turn for the worse. During that time, you should emphasize his role as a family man and devoted husband. The more you focus on this side of him, the more intriguing the eventual revelations are likely to be.
1) The movie is titled after Holland, Michigan, a city with a strong Dutch influence, serving as its backdrop. Initially, Nancy represents the ideal image of a traditional American homemaker. As for the location, Kidman stated, “It was an amazing canvas for Mimi to work her magic. She aimed to construct another realm, and the scenery of windmills, clogs, and more provided such a filmic foundation for her artistry. We managed to develop characters in a somewhat exaggerated reality, then led you on a rollercoaster ride full of twists, craziness, and wildness.
Bernal, undeniably, wasn’t portraying a character from the Dutch Midwest. Instead, Dave, being of Mexican-American descent, experiences feelings of alienation in Holland, which intensifies the strain in his connection with Nancy, a well-liked resident in the community.
Bernal shared that it was an exceptional experience to depict a Chicano character, a segment of Mexican culture deeply rooted in the American tradition for numerous years. He added, “Traveling to regions within the U.S. where this identity is distinctly unique. The Chicano identity differs significantly from that of Los Angeles or here in Texas. I relished exploring my personal realm and performing alongside [Kidman and Macfadyen], while also having a fantastic time.
