Nicolas Cage Says He Got ‘Stuck in the Rip Tide’ and ‘Could Have Died’ While Training for ‘The Surfer’: ‘I’ve Been Pounded to Smithereens’

In training for his latest psychological thriller titled “The Surfer,” Nicholas Cage had an up-close encounter with a shark. This movie, currently showing in cinemas, sees Cage portraying an unnamed businessman seeking to reclaim his Australian childhood home. However, he finds the property is safeguarded by a secretive group of thugs who promptly turn his life into a living hell.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cage admitted that his surfing training turned out to be riskier than he initially thought.

In our discussions, we covered topics such as weather and shark sightings, among other things. Despite having tried surfing before, each time I’ve given it a go, I’ve ended up getting badly beaten up,” Cage admitted. “I went surfing at Sunset Beach. When I was trying to learn, my instructor provided me with a shortboard. I replied, ‘Actually, I prefer a longboard.’

Despite using a longboard, the waves managed to overpower Cage. “I was hammered by the waves and ended up trapped in the undertow,” he explains, mimicking the vertical position of his board’s tip emerging from the water with a ‘tombstone’ shape, as they described it.

As I somersaulted my way upward on that leash, I found myself in a precarious position where death seemed imminent,” Cage admitted. “With a child of my own now, I’m not sure I have the same desire to take such risks anymore.

In the movie “The Surfer,” directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin, the main character played by Cage doesn’t have a smooth journey. When local bullies prevent him from buying or surfing at his childhood home, he descends into madness. Despite not being a natural surfer, Cage hints that he might take up surfing again. His ultimate plan is to retire, enjoy surfing, drink red wine, and indulge in spaghetti.
